Rose Byrne is taking on a new role.
The 41-year-old actress is set to play New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in Andrew Niccol‘s upcoming film They Are Us, per THR.
According to the outlet, the movie is set in March 2019 and will center on the week following the terrorist attacks on two mosques in Christchurch by a white supremacist.
The film will focus on Jacinda‘s response to the attacks and her ability to unify New Zealand’s government and citizens through her message of compassion and empathy, which ultimately led the country to ban assault rifles.
“They Are Us is not so much about the attack but the response to the attack…how an unprecedented act of hate was overcome by an outpouring of love and support,” said director Andrew Niccol. “The film addresses our common humanity, which is why I think it will speak to people around the world. It is an example of how we should respond when there’s an attack on our fellow human beings.”
