IND vs NZ 2021: Shubman Gill Needs To Work On Dealing With Fuller Balls – Wasim Jaffer

The Home of Cricket Addicts
Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer pointed out a minor flaw in Shubman Gill’s technique which needs to be worked upon if he is to survive at the highest level.
Jaffer took note of the way Gill was dismissed by Kyle Jamieson on the first day of the first Test between India and New Zealand at the Green Park in Kanpur. He pointed out that fuller deliveries have caused Gill quite a bit of trouble in recent times.
I think he needs to be ready for those fuller balls. He obviously goes deep in his crease and likes to play those backfoot shots, but as I said, he opens the batting in IPL and white-ball cricket [against the moving ball].
“That is something he needs to work on and get better at because that is the length the international bowlers will bowl at,” Jaffer said in a conversation with ESPNcricinfo.
Shubman Gill made a stable 52 in the first session before being dismissed by Jamieson in the very first over after lunch. Although the break could have caused a lapse in concentration, it isn’t the first time Gill has been dismissed in that manner, as per Wasim Jaffer.
He goes deep into the crease and plays it from there. It’s all about getting forward to the ball. Sometimes he just hangs back to fuller balls and then throws his bat. And that is going to be a challenge for him even if he is batting on 50 or 60 like today,” Jaffer added.
At the end of the day’s play, India was 258/4, with debutant Shreyas Iyer batting on 75* while Ravindra Jadeja was on 50*.
