BEACH VOLLEYBALL SEASON FINALLY BEGINS; HORNETS FALL IN CLOSE MATCH AT PACIFIC

SACRAMENTO — Sacramento State’s Paige Swinney and Kalani Hayes were victorious at No. 2, but it was not enough as the Hornets opened the beach volleyball season with a 4-1 road loss at Pacific.

Sacramento State was playing its first match of 2021. The season was slightly delayed as the Hornet indoor team just wrapped up play less than two weeks ago. In addition, Sacramento State was playing for the first time in over 13 months. The Hornets last played on March 7, 2020, before the pandemic hit.

The Hornets saw their two-game winning streak against Pacific snapped. The Tigers improved to 2-5 on the young season while Sacramento State dropped to 0-1.

All five matches were close today, as three went to three sets, and the other two were grinders as well. Swinney and Hayes beat the Tigers’ Alexa Edwards/Gabby Leo by a 21-19, 16-21, 18-16 score.

Other three setters included Sarah Falk/Michelle Taynton falling at No. 3 (18-21, 21-13, 15-11), and Paige Calvin/Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin at No. 4 (21-9, 19-21, 15-12). At No. 1, Macey Hayden/Ashtin Olin fell by 21-18, 21-16 scores, and Caty Cordano/Karlee Soderberg dropped their match at No. 5 by a 22-20, 21-16 score.

The Hornets will debut their new on-campus beach courts, dubbed Hornet Beach, next week. The two-day tournament, which takes place on April 17-18, will see the Hornets play both Pacific (10 a.m.) and Santa Clara (1 p.m.) on Saturday, and San Jose State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
