UChicago Athletics Preview: January 28-30

No. 16-ranked UChicago will face off against some of the best squads in the nation at the Wheaton College’s two-day invite on Friday and Saturday. First held in 1938, the Pete Willson Invitational is the oldest and largest small-college wrestling tournament in the country.

At the 2020 Pete Willson Invite, the Maroons had five wrestlers reach the podium, which allowed the squad to finish sixth out of 34 teams in attendance. Steve Bonsall (157 pounds), Cole Fibranz (285 pounds) and Ryan Fleck (141 pounds) each finished third in their respective weight classes.

Men’s Basketball

The Maroons (6-9 overall, 1-3 UAA) play a pair of University Athletic Association away games this weekend. They take on Case Western Reserve University (13-2, 3-1 UAA) on Friday and Carnegie Mellon University (8-6, 1-3 UAA) on Sunday.

Last week, UChicago went 1-1 at home with a 62-47 loss to Brandeis University and a 70-57 win over New York University. The Maroons closed the NYU game on a 20-2 run over the final 7:30 of game time. Brandon Beckman was the leading scorer against NYU with 19 points, with Elliot Paschal adding 18 points of his own.

Women’s Basketball

UChicago (8-7 overall, 1-4 UAA) continues conference action with two road contests at Case Western Reserve (6-10, 1-4 UAA) on Friday night and Carnegie Mellon (9-5, 3-2 UAA) on Sunday afternoon.

The Maroons posted a 1-1 home record last weekend with a 64-58 victory against Brandeis and a 72-64 loss to No. 9-ranked NYU. UChicago outscored Brandeis 25-12 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Mallory Brodnik led the way with a career-high 17 points in 19 minutes played.

Swimming & Diving

The Maroons will host meets on consecutive days this weekend inside the Myers-McLoraine Pool. Friday night will be a dual meet with University of Illinois-Chicago. Saturday afternoon will feature a triangular with DePauw University and Calvin University.

Last Saturday, UChicago won a combined 28 events to race past Hope College in a road dual meet. The men won 216.5 to 81.5 and the women triumphed 224 to 76. Men’s diver Logan Sherwin earned UAA Athlete of the Week on Monday thanks to his victories on the one-meter board (279.50) and three-meter board (289.80).

Indoor Track & Field

UChicago will take part in the Aurora University Grand Prix on Saturday. Gately Indoor Track & Field in Chicago will host the meet.

In the latest USTFCCCA national rankings, the Maroon women stand at No. 4 and the men rank at No. 16. Both UChicago squads finished runner-up at the Illinois Wesleyan University triangular last Saturday. The Maroons claimed eight first-place finishes on the day, which included a pair of wins by Molly Laumakis in the women’s shot put (13.08 meters) and weight throw (15.43 meters).

Men’s Tennis

The Maroons kick off their 2022 schedule against two area opponents. XS Tennis will be the host site for when UChicago takes on North Central College on Saturday, followed by Illinois Institute of Technology on Sunday.

During fall tournament action, Derek Hsieh posted a team-best 5-1 singles record. The Maroons last played North Central in April 2021, picking up wins of 9-0 and 8-1. UChicago has won 10-straight January matches dating back to 2015.
