Mark Petchey has dropped a major praise on Nick Kyrgios’ serve, calling it a top-5 all-time. Kyrgios, 27, is widely considered as one of the best servers on the Tour and it was a major weapon throughout the entire grass season.
Kyrgios didn’t win a title during this past grass season, but he was definitely one of the best players during this past grass swing. Kyrgios reached back-to-back grass semifinals in Stuttgart and Halle, before making his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon.
Kyrgios was serving at an extremely high level throughout the entire grass season and his service was the key in his run to the Wimbledon final. “In Isolation, it’s one of the top five serves of all time, ” Petchey said on Tennis Channel’s Inside-In, per Sportskeeda.
“Yeah okay, he hasn’t won Majors, so how do you say that? Bottom line is just in isolation, it’s one of the best serves of all time.”
Petchey praises Kyrgios’ Washington run
This week, Kyrgios kicked off his summer on hard courts.
In his first tournament post-Wimbledon, Kyrgios reached the Washington semifinal. “I think we are all going to have to accept the fact there’s going to be moments where people are going to go ‘that felt unacceptable’, ” Petchey said.
“But, right now, where he is, the quality of tennis that he has put on the court in Washington after coming off the back of that final at Wimbledon, very few players have done and would have done. He has carried that momentum and the passion and the desire, and the focus.
The quality of tennis, takeaway the tweeners and all that, the way he has played in general so far in Washington has been unreal.” Kyrgios proved at Wimbledon that he is capable of making a strong run at a Grand Slam tournament. It will be interesting to see how Kyrgios does at the US Open, which starts on August 29.
