A Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) Sea, Air, and Mountain (SEAM) field ranger is receiving medical treatment for severe wounds sustained during an attack by a suspected poacher.

The suspected poacher was among six people arrested on Tuesday morning after the team detected poaching activities in the TMNP marine protected area in Glencairn, Cape Town, on Monday evening.

SEAM operators and police recovered 112 perlemoen and diving gear from a suspicious vehicle believed to have been used in the crime.

They confiscated the car and arrested six people, one of whom fought the ranger while resisting arrest.

TMNP’s Megan Taplin wished the ranger a speedy recovery and expressed concern about the dangerous environments in which rangers work.

Taplin also commended the team for arresting the suspects.

“Congratulations must go to the SEAM operations rangers and members of SAPS for the successful arrest of the suspects. Thank you for your dedication and hard work in the fight to preserve our natural resources at all costs,” said Taplin.
