Novak Djokovic breaks Tommy Paul’s serve to clinch the first set 7-5, eliciting a shower of boos.
It became clear throughout the first set that the majority of spectators at Rod Laver Arena were barracking for the American underdog, getting behind his resurgence.
Djokovic sealed the first set when Paul hit a forehand wide, before the Serbian put a hand on his right ear and gazed into the crowd aggressively.
“He’s listening for the crowd,” said Nine commentator Todd Woodbridge.
“Not the response he was after, I suggest, but he’s still got the opening set.”
The Nine broadcast didn’t pick it up, but the Stan coverage captured some spectators breaking into a “Novak” chant.
“Djokovic wins the opening set, but boy did he take the scenic route to get there,” Robbie Koenig said on the Stan broadcast.
“He is in fighting mode this evening and he has had to dig deep to win that opening set.”
