Women’s basketball stumped on Senior Day

FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College women’s basketball team fell 74-47 against Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opponent York College of Pennsylvania on Senior Day.

Inside the Box Score

Tiffany Manning (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) had 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal on the day.

Na’Vaye Quarles (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) tallied up 11 points, five assists and three steals.

Chanelle Lee (Brunswick, Md./Saint John’s Catholic Prep) also picked up ten points, eight rebounds and two steals.

How it Happened

York had a few early scores in the in first quarter gaining an lead over the Blazers. Hood responded with scores of its own attempting to cut the Spartans lead. With just over two minutes left in the quarter the Blazers resulted to their three point shooting scoring three three pointers before the end of the quarter. Quarles knocked down two three pointers and Nikki Etchison (Ijamsville, MD/Oakdale) made one in the final minute going into the second with a score of 26-15 in favor of York.

The second quarter scoring for both teams was a close contest as the Blazers picked up 12 points compared to the Spartans 14 points. Both teams traded baskets. In this quarter six fouls were recorded as Hood and York had an even split of foul shots attempted in the quarter. Closing out the first half of play the scoreboard read 40-27 Spartans. 

 A third quarter offensive outburst from York College of Pennsylvania brought the Spartans up 28 points putting the Blazers in a scoring deficit. The score going into the fourth was 65-37.

In the final quarter of play the Blazers put on a more promising performance out scoring the Spartans in this quarter 10-9. Manning would pick up six of the ten points scored in this quarter. At the end of regulation the score was 74-47.

For the Opponent

Taylor Burda led York in scoring with 14 points and one assist. 

Alyssa Hocker followed closely behind with 11 points and three assists.


York shot 44.8 percent from the field, while Hood converted just 23.2 percent of their shots.

The Spartans outrebounded the Blazers 46-34.


When asked about what he plans to take away from the current season and bring over to the next, Head Coach DéRonté Polite said, “I believe we have started setting a foundation for what is expected in order to be a competitive basketball team. At the D3 level, it’s truly a partnership between the coaches and student-athletes. The strength of that partnership will determine how quickly we can achieve succes in the coming years.” 

Before the game, Hood honored seniors Tiffany Manning (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) and Nikki Etchison (Ijamsville, MD/Oakdale).

Hood completes its season with a record of 4-21 (3-11), while York improves to 15-10 (8-6).

The Blazers will be back in action for the fall 2024 season.
