Swiatek Sweeps Past Sakkari For Second Indian Wells Masters Title

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek rolled to her second Indian Wells Masters title Sunday cruising past Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-0.

“I’m really proud of myself,” Swiatek said. “I’m super happy. I mean, even though this tournament looked like, the scores, maybe I had everything under control, it wasn’t from the beginning to the end so easy. So I’m happy I could improve during the tournament. I felt really good on the last two matches, big amount of confidence.”

Swiatek won her first Indian Wells trophy two years ago, also beating Sakkari in straight sets.

This week, the Polish star never dropped a set in six matches and never even faced 5-all or a set point.

Swiatek won 12 of the first 15 points of the match, then won the last eight games from 4-all in the first set.

“I just knew what I wanted to improve,” Swiatek said of 4-all. “I had pretty clear idea of that. I just focused on that and I kept focusing on it till the end. I knew that I should have, you know, made some decisions that let Maria come back to the game a little bit when I lost my lead.

“But honestly, like, there is no point of overanalyzing it, because it’s not like I have been broken. We still had 3-All, 4-All. 4-All? Yeah, I wasn’t feeling like I lost control or something. I just knew what I wanted to improve and I did that.”

In six matches, Swiatek lost a total of three games in the second set.

“I would say at the beginning of the tournament I felt like, again, I didn’t have much luck with the draw. I played, you know, opponents that sometimes I struggled with,” Swiatek said. “I lost against Linda in Australia this year. Then I was pretty stressed actually, you know, before facing Caroline Wozniacki, because I felt like we haven’t played in a while. I didn’t really know how her game feels on my racquet. I just have huge respect for her. This was the kind of match where I had to kind of work through the stress.”

Overall, it’s Swiatek’s eighth Masters 1000 title and 19th overall, second of the season.
