Tsitsipas Wins Third Monte Carlo Crown

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the Monte Carlo champion for the third time in four years, capping off a resurgent week with a 6-1 6-4 victory over Casper Ruud in Sunday’s final.
The Greek has produced some of the best tennis of his career at the Monte Carlo Country Club, and he was in fine form on Sunday.
He dictated with his forehand to win a one-sided first set, weathered a mini-revival from the Norwegian in the second, and raised his game to break decisively to seal his third Monte Carlo crown.

Thoughts on the Final

Tsitsipas hasn’t had the best last twelve months on tour and had slipped out of the top 10 in recent weeks for the first time since 2018.
However, the clay court is his natural habitat, and he can set foot on it without adapting his game, giving him much less to think about.
That showed this week, and he’s got back to playing some of his best tennis, where he can use his heavy forehand to open up the court, and his backhand is not as easy to exploit as it is on hard courts.
In the final against Ruud, Tstisipas played a free-flowing style from the word go, dictating off his forehand wing and exploiting the Norwegian’s deep court position.
Once Tsitsipas can land a few heavy cuts at the ball, it’s hard to get back into the point, and I thought he did a great job at stopping Ruud from bringing the points back to neutral.
I’d also say Ruud played poorly. His best shot, the forehand, didn’t fire. He also had a lot of second serves to look at but didn’t make the most of them. This was a somewhat flat performance, which was maybe expected after his big win against Djokovic last night.
Can Ruud win a big final, or will he remain the ATP 250 man? He can probably get a 500 or 1000 on clay at some point, but it won’t be easy.
With the win, Tsitsipas is comfortably back in the top 10. He has an 86.9% win rate in Monte Carlo, second only to Nadal’s 92.4%, and it’s by far his most successful tournament.
It has been very difficult, so being back on the podiums and winning tournaments feels amazing; I can’t thank my family and friends enough, and if there is God out there for making this moment possible. I am extremely grateful for every person behind this journey. The third time is even more special than the first or second time. This is an unbelievable win for me. Capturing that win today was nerve-wracking. I wanted this trinity. I am extremely happy today. I had to go out there and show my tennis as I promised every single one of them [my team] that I would make the most out of it. I am glad I presented on the court and showed some ruthless tennis. From the beginning to the end my play was cohesive and I was able to blend in a lot of different shots. Tsitsipas on his third Monte Carlo win.
