Madrid Open Draw 2024 – Perfect Tennis

The European clay swing is hotting up, and the 2024 Madrid Open draw is now out ahead of play commencing in the Spanish capital on Wednesday, 24 April.

Novak Djokovic was the pre-tournament casualty as he withdrew before the draw was made, which didn’t come as a surprise given his prior indications of lightening his schedule this season.

Rafael Nadal continues his comeback from injury and starts against wildcard Darwin Blanch. Carlos Alcaraz is also back after missing Monte Carlo and Barcelona due to a forearm injury, and he’ll start against Alexander Shevchenko or Arthur Rinderknech.

Thoughts on the Draw

Top Quarter

Seeded players: (1) Jannik Sinner, (5) Casper Ruud, (9) Grigor Dimitrov, (16) Karen Khachanov, (19) Adrian Mannarino, (22) Nicolas Jarry, (29) Cameron Norrie, (32) Jordan Thompson

Jannik Sinner enters Madrid as the top seed and heads up the top half of the draw.

In his opening match, the Italian will face either a qualifier or fellow countryman Lorenzo Sonego. Sonego has never been past round 1 in Madrid, so it’s unlikely he poses much of a threat.

However, from round 4 onwards, it gets tricky with a potential meeting with Khachanov or Jarry.

Newly crowned Barcelona champion Casper Ruud is seeded for the quarterfinal, but he hasn’t progressed past the second round in his last two visits, and faster conditions have not helped his game. Dimitrov could be the one to make it there instead of the Norwegian.

Then a potential semi-final against the rejuvenated Tsitsipas or Medvedev is on the cards, with the Greek 10-1 on the clay this season after winning his third Monte Carlo title.

Alcaraz is the seeded opponent for the final.

Sinner’s Path to the Title

  • Round 1: Bye
  • Round 2: Lorenzo Sonego
  • Round 3: Jordan Thompson / Pavel Kotov
  • Round 4: Karen Khachanov / Nicolás Jarry
  • Quarterfinal: Casper Ruud / Grigor Dimitrov
  • Semifinal: Stefanos Tsitsipas / Daniil Medvedev
  • Final: Carlos Alcaraz / Andrey Rublev / Alexander Zverev

Second Quarter

Seeded players: (3) Daniil Medvedev, (6) Stefanos Tsitsipas, (10) Alex De Minaur, (14) Ben Shelton, (17) Alexander Bublik, (20) Frances Tiafoe, (25) Sebastian Korda, (30) Jiri Lehecka

Rafael Nadal is in the second quarter of the draw as he gears up for a historic 20th appearance at the Madrid Open and enters with a Protected Ranking.

The Spaniard suffered a second-round loss in Barcelona last week and faced wildcard Darwin Blanch in the opening round.

Blanch is the lowest-ranked player in the draw, so he lacks big-match experience. However, he does have a potent first serve, which is already hitting top speeds at just sixteen years of age.

Should Nadal progress, a potential rematch with Alex De Minaur in the second round, who beat him handily in Barcelona

Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas claim the top two seeds in the second quarter.

Medvedev could have a challenging match against Sebastian Korda in the third round, while Tsitsipas might face Jiri Lehecka. However, the Czech has not set foot on a clay court due to a back injury.

Houston champion Ben Shelton is also in this section. He commences against Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round, possibly leading to a clash with Roberto Carballes Baena in the third and a showdown with Medvedev in the fourth. Can the American transfer his form onto the European clay?

Third Quarter

Seeded players: (4) Alexander Zverev, (8) Hubert Hurkacz, (12) Taylor Fritz, (15) Tommy Paul, (18) Sebastian Baez, (21) Francisco Cerundolo, (26) Thomas Martin Etcheverry, (31) Arthur Fils

Two-time champion Alexander Zverev lands in the third quarter, and while he hasn’t landed any big titles, the German has made a strong start to the season and has a solid track record in Madrid. He’ll kick off his campaign against Borna Coric in the second round.

Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul are also in the section. Paul is making his first clay court appearance this year after twisting his ankle in Indian Wells and Miami.

Fritz arrives on the heels of a commendable runner-up finish in the Munich Open. A potential showdown between the two looms in the quarterfinals if they navigate their earlier matches successfully.

Clay court specialist Sebastian Baez will add to the mix in this section. The Argentinean has already clinched two titles in the South American clay court swing and aims to showcase his prowess in Europe. His path to the quarterfinals includes challenging matchups against Zizou Bergs, Taylor Fritz and Hubert Hurkacz.

Bottom Quarter

Seeded players: (2) Carlos Alcaraz, (7) Andrey Rublev, (11) Holger Rune, (13) Ugo Humbert, (23) Jan-Lennard Struff, (24) Tallon Griekspoor, (27) Alejandro Davidovic Fokina, (28) Lorenzo Musetti.

World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz will return to the men’s tour in the Madrid Open after missing the Monte Carlo Masters and the Barcelona Open due to a forearm injury. He will begin his title defence against Arthur Rinderknech or Alexander Shevchenko in the second round.

The Spaniard could face a tricky challenge against Lorenzo Musetti in the third round and could face Jan-Lennard Struff in the fourth round.

Struff recently captured his first ATP title in Munich and will be confident entering Caja Magica, having made the final last year on his crazy run as a lucky loser.

Andrey Rublev, meanwhile, will look to rediscover his form at Lineal del Manzanares Park. The Russian has chalked up some timid early exits in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona, so will be hoping to steady the ship in Madrid. He must get past the likes of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Holger Rune to cement his place in the last eight.

Alcaraz’s Path to the Final

  • Round 1: Bye
  • Round 2: Alexander Shevchenko / Arthur Rinderknech
  • Round 3: Lorenzo Musetti
  • Round 4: Ugo Humbert / Jan-Lennard Struff
  • Quarterfinal: Andrey Rublev / Holger Rune
  • Semifinal: Alexander Zverev / Hubert Hurkacz
  • Final: Jannik Sinner
