Trump leads new crowd chant in searing heat of Vegas rally ahead of pre-sentencing probation interview: Live updates

Hundreds of San Francisco protesters greet Trump

Donald Trump concluded a rally in 110 degree Fahrenheit heat in Las Vegas on Sunday, just a day before he is scheduled to attend a virtual interview with probation officers ahead of his hush money trial defense team’s sentencing recommendation.

He started the rally by complaining about Joe Biden’s immigration policies, calling a recent move by Biden to halt asylum entries as “bulls***” and insisting that the president is not “old” but “incompetent.” He also hit his usual notes, telling voters they needed to “stop the steal” and railing against the press.

Meanwhile, the judge presiding over Trump’s hush money trial has alerted prosecutors and defense counsel about a Facebook comment from an apparent social media troll announcing a conviction one day before a jury handed down a guilty verdict. The comment has since been deleted.

This week Trump also took part in a wild interview with TV psychologist Dr Phil in which the Republican presidential candidate proclaimed that “sometimes revenge can be justified” as he looked ahead to a theoretical second term in the White House.

Dr Phil largely adhered to Trump’s conspiracy-laden point-of-view allowing false claims to pass unchecked, particularly regarding his recent conviction.

Trump jokingly tells rally-goers not to die in searing Vegas heat

To Nevada then, where Trump yesterday staged his first campaign rally proper since becoming a convicted felon, asking his supporters to brave the searing 103F heat outdoors, for which they were rewarded with jokes about their deaths and complaints that it was the candidate himself was really suffering.

Elsewhere in the Republican’s speech, he referred to the January 6 insurrectionists as “warriors” (an upgrade on “hostages”), challenged Joe Biden to a pre-debate drug test, railed at Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith and went on a bizarre rant about sharks and batteries.

He also got pretty cross about the tech he had been set up with and refused to pay his contractors.

Also, it wouldn’t be a Trump rally with a dispute over crowd sizes.

Trump to sit for virtual probation interview on Monday ahead of sentencing over hush money conviction

We’ll take another look at Trump’s latest campaign rally in Sunset Park in Las Vegas shortly but, first up, here’s a look at what’s on the itinerary for him today.

The Republican presidential candidate is set to be interviewed by the Manhattan Criminal Court’s probation department on Monday for use in the pre-sentencing recommendation and judge’s report.

Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying documents to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels late last month, you will no doubt recall.

The former president’s attorney, Todd Blanche, will be on hand for the interview, according to NBC News. The prosecution did not object to Blanche’s inclusion on the call, although it is somewhat unsusal, so Judge Juan Merchan allowed him access.

Here’s Graig Graziosi’s report.

ICYMI: Trump holding another desert rally despite 11 falling ill due to heat exhaustion before Phoenix event

Donald Trump’s summer campaign stops include locations in the middle of the desert, leaving supporters standing for hours in the merciless southwest heat. But it hasn’t stopped his fans from standing in line for him — even if it sends them to the hospital.

Nearly a dozen of the MAGA faithful in Arizona required hospitalization earlier this month while waiting to attend a Trump campaign event in Phoenix.

On Sunday, 9 June, the former president will again venture out into the desert, this time bringing his revenge and resentment tour to Las Vegas, Nevada — and into the Mojave Desert.

With a high of 104 degrees Fahrenheit (42C), the weather will once again pose a threat to lined up MAGA supporters on Sunday. This time, however, the Trump campaign has reportedly made plans to help prevent their fans from succumbing to the temperatures.

The campaign has prepared thousands of water bottles in Las Vegas to hand out to supporters waiting in line for the event and for those already inside the event’s security perimeter.

Biden and first lady visit French war cemetery that Trump snubbed on 2018 trip

The president, who has used the visit to praise US alliances in Europe and reiterate support Ukraine in its war for Russia, laid a wreath at the chapel of Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in Belleau, France, outside of Paris.

“These soldiers were heroes, just as every American who has served this nation,” Biden said during the visit, adding, “The best way to avoid these kinds of battles in the future is to stay strong with our allies.”

Many observers saw the visit as a rebuke to Donald Trump, who skipped a planned 2018 visit to the cemetery and reportedly called the servicemen buried there “suckers” and “losers.”

Trump reportedly snubbed a planned commemoration at the cemetery for the 100th anniversary of WWI, fearing his hair would become disheveled in the rain, The Atlantic reported in 2020.

Trump gets crowd chanting ‘bulls***’ over Biden’s executive order on immigration

The ex-president spoke in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon and railed against an executive order Biden signed this past week to address illegal border crossings. The order, signed by the president on Tuesday, allows the president to freeze the US asylum application system if illegal border crossings are occurring at an average rate of more than 2,500 per day.

“Last week, crooked Joe signed an executive order that is pro invasion, pro child trafficking, pro woman trafficking, pro human trafficking and pro drug dealers. It’s a pro drug dealer bill,” Trump said about the order, which is not a bill.

“What he signed means nothing. In fact, it makes it easier, in my opinion, it opens the border still further,” the ex-president continued.

He went on to label immigrants criminal and mentally ill, with the remainder smeared as lazy and “not productive” — and explicitly not part of his vision to “Make America Great Again”.

Trump says only a ‘psycho’ would call war dead ‘suckers and losers’ – which a general says Trump did

During a rally Sunday in Las Vegas, the former president called the alleged comments “disinformation” reported by the “fake news.”

“Think of it from a practical standpoint, I’m standing there with generals and military people, in a cemetery and I look at them, I say, ‘These people are suckers and losers,’” he began.

“Now, think of it,” he continued, “unless you’re a psycho or a crazy person or a very stupid person—who would say that anyway—but who would say it to military people?”

In fact, no one is alleging Trump made the insults at a French cemetery.

Senator Tom Cotton insists Trump has a ‘strong’ relationship with Zelensky, despite being impeached for blackmailing the Ukrainian leader

During a recent Fox News interview, a host asked Senator Tom Cotton about Donald Trump’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, specifically about the former president’s feeling that Ukraine should allow Russia to take some of the land it has occupied to bring the fighting to an end.

“Isn’t that giving Putin what he wants,” Fox News host Shannon Bream asked.

Cotton insisted that the president never offered those opinions as official policy stances, and then argued that Trump and Ukrainian President Voldomyr Zelensky have a “strong relationship.”

“Trump has said that any reports of plans like that are not authorized. Trump had a strong relationship with Zelensky,” he said.

The former president was impeached for the first time because he threatened to withhold aid from Ukraine and to revoke Zelensky’s invite to the White House if the Ukrainian leader didn’t launch a formal investigation into Joe Biden ahead of the 2016 election.
