Women’s basketball tames Golden Wolves



FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College Women’s basketball team received its third conference win of the season after defeating Alvernia University 77-61. 

Inside the Box Score

Chanelle Lee (Brunswick, Md./Saint John’s Catholic Prep) had a double double on the night, leading the Blazers with 28 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, three steals and one blocked shot.

Na’Vaye Quarles (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) tallied up 15 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Nikki Etchison (Ijamsville, MD/Oakdale) picked up 10 points, two assists, and one steal on the night. 

How it Happened

Hood started out the first quarter with four different Blazers scoring. Lee scored first for Hood with a made layup followed by two made free throws a minute later. Three and a half minutes in Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) capitalized on an uncontested jump shot, quickly followed up by an Alvernia score and then Etchison responded with another made jumper for Hood with six minutes on the clock. Six minutes into the game Amari Faust (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) made a lay up and thirty seconds later made another jump shot to make the score 12-6 in favor of Hood. The quarter ended with the Blazers in the lead with a score of 20-13.

In the second quarter the teams scores for the first quarter were flipped. With three minutes left the quarter, the Blazers showcased a three point shooting clinic. The stretch began with a made three pointer by Quarles at 3:30, followed up by another made three pointer by Lee just thirty three seconds later. With a minute left in the half the Golden Wolves had its biggest lead over the Blazers with three points after a made layup by Alvernia’s Jordan Karmonick. However the lead did not last as Quarles knocked down another three pointer before the halftime buzzer, evening out the both teams score at 33 points. 

In the third Hood went on its biggest scoring run of the game picking up 11 straight points. The run started with a made three pointer by Etchison, then two made free throws by Tiffany Manning (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech), and a made three pointer by Quarles. Going into the fourth the Blazers led Alvernia by eight 54-46

The final quarter showcased Hood gaining its biggest lead over Alvernia. Both teams traded baskets until the Golden Wolves would enter foul trouble and allow for the Blazers to pick up a 19 point lead with just 40 seconds left. The match up ended with a final score of 77-61 in favor of Hood.

For the Opponent

Tamia Wessels was credited with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Morgan Janeski had 9 points, two rebounds and one assist on the night. 

Analysis 

Hood shot 49.1 percent from the field compared to Alvernia’s 34.4 percent. 

 

The Blazers out scored the Golden Wolves in points in the paint 30-16. 

 

Notes 

Hood advances to 3-10 in conference and 4-19 overall, while Alvernia falls to 6-7 in conference and 14-10 overall.

When asked about the outcome of the game, Head Coach DéRonté Polite said, “It was a great team victory. We had three people score in double figures. We shot the ball well. I felt that we had mental toughness and when they made their runs and got back into the game I believe the team responded very well. During time outs we went out ant took control back over the game. As a coach I couldn’t be more proud.” 

Hood College Faculty and Staff were recognized for today’s Faculty Appreciation basketball game.

The Blazers are back in action on Thursday, February 15 when they travel to Fredericksburg, Virgina to face off against non conference opponent University of Mary Washington at 6 p.m.
