Women’s basketball baffled by Stevenson



OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Second quarter struggles cause Hood College women’s basketball team to drop contest 67-52 against Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth foe Stevenson University.

Inside the Box Score

Chanelle Lee (Brunswick, Md./Saint John’s Catholic Prep) led both teams in scoring with 20 points, 13 rebounds, two steals and one block.

Na’Vaye Quarles (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) followed closely behind with 18 points, three steals, and two assists.

Nikki Etchison (Ijamsville, MD/Oakdale) picked up eight points, four steals and one assist on the night.

How it Happened

Both teams showed great scoring efforts in the first quarter, with seven lead changes. The quarter began in favor the Mustangs until Lee and Quarles responded with two scores of their own to give Hood the lead three minutes in. In the last minute of the first Quarles made a fast break layup bringing Hood within six. Stevenson then went up two points with a good jumper and finally Etchison made a free throw to bring the Blazers within 7 points with a score of 24-17.

The second quarter was unkind to Hood as the Blazers picked up 4 points compared to Stevenson’s 12. Lee notably made a layup in the seventh minute and another in the third minute closing out scoring for Hood in the first half. Going into the third quarter Stevenson led Hood 36-21.

The Blazers began the third quarter with a more promising start. Hood started the second half off with three different Blazers scoring starting off with a made layup by Etchison, then a made jump shot by Lee in the eight minute, and lastly a made three pointer by Quarles in the seventh minute. Lee then made a fastbreak layup to bring the Blazers within six from the Mustangs. Closing out the quarter Hood trailed Stevenson by just ten points 52-42. 

Lee scored first in the fourth bringing Stevenson’s lead to eight just one minute into the quarter. Both teams would trade baskets throughout the final minutes of the game. The match would end with a Quarles two point jumper with just seconds left on the game clock closing out the games scoring 67-52 in favor of the Mustangs. 

For the Opponent

Elia Richardson finished with 15 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dished out three assists.

Kalea Wynter ended the evening with eight points, nine rebounds, and two assists.

Analysis

Hood shot 45.1 percent from the field, compared to 35.7 percent from Stevenson.

The Mustangs’ bench outscored the Blazers 35-3.

Notes

When asked about the outcome of the game, Head Coach DéRonté Polite said, “They wanted it more than us. We didn’t compete tonight. It’s sad because we shot it really well but in between their offensive rebounds and our turnovers we didn’t get enough shot attempts.”

The Blazers drop to 3-18 overall, 2-9 in conference, with the Mustangs improving to 6-16 overall, 2-9 in conference.
