National Bank Open Presented by Rogers Draw 2024

The most neglected Masters 1000 tournament, the National Bank Open, is here. Olympic gold medalist Novak Djokovic and silver medalist Carlos Alcaraz have already withdrawn from the tournament, resulting in a somewhat depleted field. Bronze medalist Lorenzo Musetti is also missing.

Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Felix Auger-Aliassime may struggle to transition from recent grass and clay competitions.

However, defending champion and top seed Jannik Sinner enters the tournament well-rested after missing the Paris Olympics due to tonsillitis.

Thoughts on the Draw

national bank open draw thoughtsnational bank open draw thoughts

With the 2024 National Bank Open draw set, the absence of stars like Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz has somewhat killed the excitement for this tournament. Given its spot in the calendar, it’s always been a prime event to get skipped by the guys who went deep at Wimbledon and the Olympics has thrown another spanner into the works.

Top Half: Sinner, Medvedev, Rublev, and Tsitsipas Headline

Seeded Players: (1) Jannik Sinner, (3) Daniil Medvedev, (5) Andrey Rublev, (8) Stefanos Tsitsipas, (10) Tommy Paul, (12) Ugo Humbert, (15) Alejandro Tabilo, (16) Karen Khachanov

Expected Semifinal: Jannik Sinner vs. Daniil Medvedev

Defending champion Jannik Sinner may face Frances Tiafoe or Alejandro Tabilo in the third round. Still, I feel he will dominate here and for the rest of the season.

Potential quarterfinal opponents include fifth seed Andrey Rublev or tenth seed Tommy Paul. Sinner’s 2024 hard-court form suggests he will prove too solid for either of those guys, although Paul’s athletic ability isn’t easy to overcome.

Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are the main threats on the other side of this half. At the same time, players like Karen Khachanov and Ugo Humbert could get themselves in the mix. A Medvedev-Tsitsipas quarterfinal seems likely, and even though Meddy’s game has shown frailties this season, he likes playing in Canada.

A Sinner-Medvedev semifinal promises excitement, especially after Medvedev’s win at SW19 and their existing rivalry, but I think Sinner will be too strong.

Semifinal Prediction: Jannik Sinner def. Daniil Medvedev.

Bottom Half: Zverev, Hurkacz, Ruud, and Dimitrov to Challenge

Seeded Players: (2) Alexander Zverev, (4) Hubert Hurkacz, (6) Casper Ruud, (7) Grigor Dimitrov, (9) Taylor Fritz, (13) Holger Rune, (14) Felix Auger-Aliassime

Predicted Semifinal: Taylor Fritz vs. Grigor Dimitrov

Alexander Zverev, the second seed, could face Jack Draper in the second round but is expected to reach the quarterfinals, given his season so far.

He could face either sixth seed Casper Ruud or ninth seed Taylor Fritz. Ruud has had an inconsistent few months, so the American Fritz is probably more likely to spring an upset.

In the other section, Hubert Hurkacz, Grigor Dimitrov, Ben Shelton, and Felix Auger-Aliassime are all capable of deep runs.

Hurkacz has made a speedy recovery from a knee problem, which is expected to keep him out for several months. Dimitrov hasn’t played since his Wimbledon withdrawal against Medvedev, so both have question marks over their fitness.

First-Round Matches to Watch

  • Alejandro Tabilo vs Frances Tiafoe
  • Arthur Fils vs. Ugo Humbert
  • Felix Auger-Aliassime vs. Flavio Cobolli
  • Ben Shelton vs. Alexander Bublik
  • Holger Rune vs. Milos Raonic
  • Jack Draper vs. Jordan Thompson

Are you looking forward to the Canadian Open? Has the Olympic Tennis event pushed it aside?
