Cincinnati Open Draw 2024 – Perfect Tennis

The 2024 Cincinnati Open draw went live on Saturday afternoon and will mark the start of Carlos Alcaraz’s summer hard-court swing.

There is no Rafael Nadal, who also withdrew from the US Open, and Novak Djokovic also withdrew pre-tournament, opting to rest ahead of the year’s final Grand Slam.

Therefore, Alcaraz is the No. 2 seed behind Jannik Sinner, who appeared to pick up an injury during his Montreal loss to Rublev.

Other first-round bye recipients are Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, and Grigor Dimitrov.

Thoughts on the Draw

Top Half: Sinner, Zverev and Rublev headline

Seeded players: Jannik Sinner (1), Alexander Zverev (3), Andrey Rublev (6), Grigor Dimitrov (8), Taylor Fritz (11), Ben Shelton (12), Ugo Humbert (13), Sebastian Korda (16)

Top seed Jannik Sinner heads up this section of the draw, but given his loss against Rublev in Montreal, I’m not 100% sure he will play. As he said previously, he needs to manage his hip.

If he takes to the court, he will kick off his campaign against either Tallon Griekspoor, a qualifier. Griekspoor is a tricky opponent with an impressive serve, so it’s not a given.

Sinner could then face Ugo Humbert or Marcos Giron in the third round, and a potential quarterfinal clash with either Andrey Rublev or Taylor Fritz looms.

The other quarter of this half of the draw features strong contenders such as Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov and plenty of homegrown players like Ben Shelton, Sebastian Korda, and Reilly Opelka, who could all make the latter stages.

With Montreal still in full swing, predicting the Cincy outcome is difficult. Zverev is in good form, but if he wins Montreal, can he perform at back-to-back Masters 1000 events? Similarly, if he suffers a tough loss, does it derail his Cincy campaign?

Bottom Half: Alcaraz starts his US Open Series

Seeded players: Carlos Alcaraz (2), Daniil Medvedev (4), Hubert Hurkacz (5), Casper Ruud (7), Stefanos Tsitsipas (9), Tommy Paul (10), Lorenzo Musetti (14), Holger Rune (15).

This half of the Cincinnati Masters draw features second seed and last year’s runner-up Carlos Alcaraz, who begins his campaign in the second round against either Gael Monfils or Alexei Popyrin,

In my opinion, last year’s final with Djokovic was the best match of the year, and I think Alcaraz will enjoy the conditions in Cincy.

With Alcaraz’s current form and who’s on this side of the draw, he’s a big favourite for the final. Ruud and Tsitsipas are his projected opponents for the last eight, but Ruud is recovering from a virus that forced his withdrawal. At the same time, the Greek is relatively useless on quicker hard courts and has coaching problems to resolve. Berrettini may be the most significant threat if he gets past Rune in the opening round.

The top section of this half includes former champion Daniil Medvedev, Hubert Hurkacz, Tommy Paul, and Lorenzo Musetti.

All of them can reach the quarters, but I think Tommy Paul will bounce back after his early loss in Montreal, probably due to the quick turnaround from the Paris Olympics.

Still, it’s hard to see past Alcaraz making the final, but further analysis will be provided once the qualifiers are added and the Montreal tournament has concluded.

First-Round Matches To Watch

  • Stefanos Tsitsipas (9) vs. Jan-Lennard Struff

  • Karen Khachanov vs. Francisco Cerundolo
  • Taylor Fritz (12) vs. Brandon Nakashima
