Scheffler’s mind-blowing season in numbers

By winning the first FedEx Cup of his career tonight, world number 1 Scottie Scheffler managed to defy the not always obvious mathematical logic of a season on the PGA Tour and sporting logic. An award that crowns an exceptional season!

Once in a tie with Xander Schauffele for the honorary title of Player of the Year, it now seems impossible that this award will escape Scottie Scheffler in a few months. Indeed, at the end of a dizzying week, and with an 8th success (7 on the PGA Tour + the Paris 2024 Olympic Games) in only 20 starts this season (including the Olympic Games), the world number 1 has definitively closed the debate.

If this is the first time that a player has accumulated so many successes in a season since Tiger Woods’ 7 titles in 2007, it is above all Scheffler’s regularity at the top of the rankings that is fascinating. In total, in 19 tournaments played on the PGA Tour, the Texan has finished in the top 10 16 times (84%).

And his 3 “worst” results are a 41st place at the US Open, a 33rd place last week in Colorado at the BMW Championship and a 17th place at the start of the season in the American Express.

A feat achieved thanks to a scoring average never reached on the PGA Tour.

In 75 games played on some of the most demanding courses in the world, Scheffler played an average of 68.01 strokes (not always very academic, see video below). That’s 2.5 strokes less than the average of the rest of the field and half a stroke less per round than his closest pursuer, Xander Schauffele.

Note that it took until the 3rd round of the PGA Championship in mid-May at Valhalla to see Scheffler return his first over-par card of the season. In total, he will have beaten the course 66 times out of 75! Sometimes with a bit of luck like here at the Masters during the 3rd round when he missed the green of the 1 but made his chip for birdie!

By winning the 13th tournament of his career on the American circuit, Scheffler is now ahead of the split times of several golf legends. Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods needed more than 1000 days after their first victory to reach this total of 13 successes.

Thanks in particular to his 4 victories in the Signature Events (out of 7 played) and his triumph at the Masters, the Texan left each tournament with an average check of $3.3M, once added of course, the bonus of 25 million gleaned this week as winner of the FedEx Cup.
