A huge day in China Friday with seeds across the board in action including three US Open champions — Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Coco Gauff — and 2024 finalist Jessica Pegula.
Alcaraz opens play against the towering young Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
“My energy level right now, it is good,” said Alcaraz who just led Team Europe to another Laver Cup win. “I have motivations to come here to play a good tennis. I’m going to try to win the tournament, as I try to do to every tournament that I go.”
Daniil Medvedev is on also against a Frenchman, veteran showman Gael Monfils. The two have split four meetings with Medvedev winning earlier this year in Monte Carlo.
“I think we played more little bit a while ago, so I think it will be different. I’m different. He’s different. It’s normal, every year everything changes.
“Actually interesting to see how it goes. Less matches. Yeah, I remember last one we played was Indian Wells, which is a little bit particular. It’s, like, slow and tough to play there. Before that was Rotterdam 2019, I would guess, which was very long ago. It’s going to be an interesting match against Gael. It’s always interesting to play. Some great points, some great rallies. So looking forward to it.”
Alcaraz and Medvedev could meet in the semifinals. Both are not even playing on the main court today. Top seed Jannik Sinner had to come from a set down to defeat Nicolas Jarry yesterday.
In the 1000 level women’s event, top Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula take the courts. Gauff makes her debut without Brad Gilbert who she let go last week. Gauff takes on Clara Burel while Pegula faces Diane Parry. Both American-French battles.
Naomi Osaka also returns to face Yulia Putintseva.
