Two big blockbuster showdowns between US Open champions highlight Tuesday at the China Open in Beijing.
The men’s semifinals will feature Carlos Alcaraz taking on Daniil Medvedev for an eighth time. Alcaraz has won five of seven including the last three with two coming this year.
“It’s always difficult facing Medvedev,” said Alcaraz who just beat Medvedev’s countryman Karen Khachanov in straights to reach the semifinals. “I played great matches against him earlier this year and during the past couple of years. I’m ready to take that challenge, to try to play my best tennis to pass him. It’s always a war. Long matches, long rallies, when I play against him, but I’m ready for the challenge.”
Medvedev looks forward to the test.
“Tomorrow, a tough test against Carlos,” said Medvedev to the ATP. “I think for me, and I think I’m not the only one to say it.
“When he’s in the zone, he’s probably the best player in the world. Tough to play him. I feel like now he’s in the zone. So it great test for me,” he added. “I’m going to see how I go out there tomorrow, what tactic, what do I believe in, and I’m going to go for it.”
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continues his title defense against the surprising Yunchaokete Bu who stunned Andrey Rublev.
The women are still many days from determining their final. But a huge collision takes place Tuesday with Coco Gauff colliding with Naomi Osaka. The have split four prior meetings but they haven’t met in over two years.
“I think it’s going to be a really cool test for me,” Osaka told the WTA. “She’s played really well this year.
“I’m excited to play the match, and I know people are excited to watch the match.”
US Open finalist Jessica Pegula faces Paula Badosa in another good fourth round affair in the bottom half.
