Trump, Harris polls tighten; Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona polls in focus; abortion on ballot in nine states
Outside a polling place in Palm Beach, Florida, 75-year-old Lynn Kelly explained why it was easy for her to vote for Kamala Harris in this election.
“Because our economy is the envy of the world, because she stands for the rights of women to make a choice, because she doesn’t undermine our institutions, she doesn’t insult and degrade our politicians and name-call,” she said.
Kelly arrived to cast her vote not long after Donald Trump had finished and departed in his motorcade.
“I waited until I knew that he had gone.”
The town of Palm Beach is a wealthy enclave – cars tend to vary from BMWs to Bentleys and golf buggies – with a higher share of registered Republicans. But overall, Palm Beach County – which includes West Palm Beach across the lagoon – is Democratic, and backed Joe Biden in 2020.
Kelly, a registered Democrat, was still a little nervous to talk about who she voted for.
“Unfortunately now in the United States one has to be careful,” she said. “There’s a lot of violence surrounding political choices, which I think is really regrettable. A lot of policy discussions are lost out of fear.”
