Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson confront Marco Jansen before umpire intervenes in first T20I
Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav were involved in a verbal spat with Marco Jansen during the fag end of the first T20I between India and South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban on Friday, November 8. Umpire Lubabalo Gcuma had to step in to pacify the tense situation before it could escalate.
The incident transpired after the second ball of the 15th over as South Africa were struggling in their chase of a 203-run target. After Gerald Coetzee took a single to get Jansen on strike, Samson collected a throw from long-off while standing on the deep right of the pitch. This didn’t sit well with Jansen as he seemed to complain about the Indian wicketkeeper’s position while collecting the throw.
Samson retaliated to this as he approached the South African all-rounder. Suryakumar also rushed in and he didn’t look too happy with Jansen’s reaction. The trio got involved in a war of words before Gcuma, who was standing at square leg, came in and brought things under control.
India look to double lead in Gqeberha
India made light work of South Africa in the first T20I on the back of Samson’s blistering century and inspirational spells from spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi. Samson hit seven fours and 10 sixes in his exhilarating knock of 107 off just 50 balls. India finished at 202/8 after being asked to bat first by Aiden Markram.

In reply, the Indian bowlers took three wickets inside the powerplay to dent South Africa’s hopes. The formidable duo of Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller looked all at sea against Chakaravarthy and Bishnoi and they eventually fell to the mystery spinner in the 12th over. The Proteas were eventually bowled out for 141 as India won comprehensively by 61 runs.
The second T20I in the four-match series takes place at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Sunday, November 10. The Men in Blue will look to double their lead, whereas South Africa will want to keep their chances of winning the series alive.
