As expected, all the IPL teams sprung several big surprises. One of the big surprises was the Kolkata Knight Riders deciding against retaining their IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer. The reigning champions retained six players. However, they did not retain Iyer.
Just like KKR, Delhi Capitals also released their captain Rishabh Pant. The wicketkeeper-batsman was with the franchise for nine years before deciding to part ways. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians managed to retain the big Indian names in their squad.
While speculations were rife that Rohit Sharma might leave the franchise after his unceremonious sacking as the captain, the five-time IPL champions managed to retain him. Besides Rohit, Mumbai Indians have also retained the likes of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma.
Chennai Super Kings have also managed to retain their former captain MS Dhoni although as an uncapped player. In addition to Dhoni, CSK have also retained captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Matheesha Pathirana, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shivam Dube.
Overall, the 10 franchises have retained a total of 46 players. Of the 10 teams, only two teams – KKR and Rajasthan Royals – have retained their full quota of six players. Punjab Kings have retained the least number of players – 2.
Meanwhile, South Africa superstar Heinrich Klaasen emerged as the highest-paid retention. Sunrisers Hyderabad secured his services for INR 23 crores ahead of the IPL auction 2025.
Punjab Kings will enter the auction with the biggest purse. After spending INR 9.5 crores to retain two uncapped players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, the Punjab-based outfit has a remaining purse of INR 110.5 crores. They are the only team to have a purse of 100 or more crores.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have the second biggest purse remaining – INR 83 crores. The Bengaluru-based outfit has retained three players – Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal. With only INR 41 crores remaining, Rajasthan Royals will go into the IPL auction 2025 with the smallest purse.
