Sinner Finishes 2024 A Winner Leading Italy To Davis Cup Title

Jannik Sinner capped his incredible, historic, 2024 season leading Italy to a third Davis Cup title in a 2-0 win over the Netherlands.

In the Sunday final in Malaga, Matteo Berrettini got the heavily-favored Italians on the board with a defeating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2. It was his eighth straight win in Davis Cup play.

Then Sinner clinched it taking down Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(2), 6-2

“It has been an amazing year. I’m very very proud of the whole team, there’s a lot of work behind it. We are very happy to hold this trophy again,” Sinner said. “It was a very difficult day today because everything can happen.

“Every year is different feelings”, he added. “Obviously coming back as defending champions and winning again, it’s one of the best feelings I think for all of us. Of course having Matteo here as a player and as a teammate, it’s a bit different. So I’m very happy and glad that we managed this.

“But the whole team gave 100%. There is a lot of work behind the scenes. Very tough decisions for Filippo, also. So we are very happy to lift this trophy and of course to go into the preseason with a bunch of confidence boosts. We are all very happy.”

Said Berrettini who got the call over Lorenzo Musetti, “I think I have been playing a really solid year. When I was playing, I felt good. What I was missing a little bit and I felt during the year was the fact that I didn’t play against the best guys for so long, you know. It takes a little bit of matches in order to get there and be consistent at that level. When I played against them, I always played good, but I felt like there was something missing, that was just matches. Today I think I played one of my best matches.”

Italy won the tie last year and previously took it in 1976. The Netherlands, who ousted home Spain in the quarters, were appearing in their first Davis Cup final.

After the Italian women won the Billie Jean King Cup last Wednesday, Italy have joined USA, Australia, Czechia and Russia as the only nations to win both the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup titles in the same year.
