Women’s basketball falls to Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Women’s basketball comes up short against Eastern Mennonite in Sunday afternoon’s 59-52 loss.

Inside the Box Score

Chanelle Lee (Brunswick, Md./Saint John’s Catholic Prep) scored 19 points and led the Blazers with nine rebounds.

Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch High School) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Maya Gordon (Towson, Md./Loch Raven High School) finished with ten points.

How it Happened

Gordon and Lee combined to give Hood an early 4-2 lead. Then, Libby Kiley’s (Taneytown, Md./Springdale Prep) effort on the defensive end sparked more offense for the Blazers. She was able to find Serenity Ritchie (Martinsburg, W.V./Martinsburg High School) for the tough finish through contact. Lee got going early and finished the first quarter with nine points. Hood’s defense looked to be stifling the Royals’ offense, leading to a 14-6 lead after the first ten minutes.

Eastern Mennonite opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run that gave them their first lead. Gordon was able to respond with a jumper of her own and take the lead back for the Blazers. The Royals’ defense picked up and led to their offense. Johnson scored twice and helped keep Hood close by. Eastern Mennonite had the slight edge and carried a 23-22 lead into halftime.

The Royals built on their second quarter and started the second half with a quick 3-pointer. Aliyah Taylor (Randallstown, Md./Pikesville High School) quickly responded with a layup to keep it a one possession game. The Blazers’ turnovers were costly, and the Royals started turning them into points on the other end. Na’Vaye Quarles (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) set her teammates up to score and earned a couple assists, as the Blazers fought back. The game remained close, and Hood trailed 39-34.

Hood competed in the fourth quarter but an early 12-2 run by Eastern Mennonite dug them in a hole that was too deep. The Blazers went down fighting, highlighted by Johnson’s late offense. In the end, the runs that the Royals went on gave them a lead that was too much to overcome. They finished the game 59-52 and were victorious over Hood.

For the Opponent

Jeriyah Osborne scored 20 points and had four steals.

Grace Burke finished with 15 points.
