Coco Gauff became the youngest player to win the WTA Finals in 20 years defeating Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) in the title match today in Riyadh.
At 3 hours, 4 minutes, it was the longest WTA Finals championship match in tournament history, and the first to finish in a final set breaker.
The 20-year-old rallied from a break down in the second (Zheng served 2-0, 30-all) and twice was a break down in the third (Zheng served for the match) to become the youngest champion since Maria Sharapova in 2004, the same year Gauff was born.
Gauff improves to 2-0 against the gold medalist who was making her WTA Finals debut.
Gauff wraps up 2024 third in the rankings but after a sub-par summer, she won 12 of her last 14 matches and winning two of her last three events to finish on a high note.
The American is 9-1 career in finals and a perfect 8-0 in hard court finals.
