Women’s basketball downs Celtics for first win of the season

FREDERICK, Md. – A season-high 29-point game from Chanelle Lee (Brunswick, Md./Saint John’s Catholic Prep) powered the Hood College women’s basketball team past Carlow University for their first win of the season by a score of 76-64.

Inside the Box Score

Lee finished with a 29-point, 11-rebound double-double, shooting 57% from the field.

Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch High School) ended the game with 17 points.

How it Happened

Hood got off to a hot start as Lee and Johnson accounted for 12 of the Blazers’ 19 points in the first quarter, giving them a 19-8 advantage after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter was even better for Hood as they scored 17 of the first 21 points to balloon their lead to 36-12 less than halfway into the period. Carlow made the next few shots to trim the lead down before halftime, but a pair of free throws from Lee with five seconds left put the Blazers in front 40-21 heading into the break.

Both teams exchanged baskets for the first few minutes of the third quarter, but the Celtics began making shot after shot while also managing to keep the Blazers hot offense at bay. By the end of the third, Hood’s lead had shrunk to just eight at 47-39.

Carlow continued to keep up at the start of the fourth, managing to cut the Blazers’ lead to 58-53 with just over four minutes to play, but a nine-point run from Hood put them back in the driver’s seat, and Na’Vaye Quarles (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) sunk five of her six free throws to finish the game out and give the Blazers a 76-64 victory.
