One Suspect Detained in Chhatisgarh in Connection to the Attack on Saif Ali Khan


On Saturday (18 January), a suspect was detained by the Raipur Railway Protection Force in Chhattisgarh in connection to the knife attack on actor Saif Ali Khan.

The cops are yet to confirm if the suspect is the man who entered the actor’s home on 16 January, NDTV reported. 

According to a report in ANI, the suspect identified as Aakash Kanojia was apprehended while travelling by the Jnaneswari Express Train. According to IANS, Mumbai police reached Raipur on Saturday night, on their way to Durg, to interrogate the suspect.

How the RPF Zeroed In On the Suspect

IG of RPF SECR Zone Bilaspur, Munawar Khursheed, told ANI, “The suspect, named Aakash Kanojia, aged 32-33 years, was detained from Durg. He will be handed over to Mumbai police, who will carry out the further investigation.”

Sanjay Sinha, the RPF in-charge at Durg, added that the Mumbai police sent a picture of the suspect and the tower location, “We got information from Mumbai Police that a suspect was travelling by the Jnaneswari Express train. They shared his photo and tower location. Based on that, we checked the general coach and found him. Mumbai Police officials were contacted through a video call, and the suspect’s identity was confirmed. He has been detained.”

20 Teams Deployed by Mumbai Police: What We Know of the Investigation 

  • During their initial investigation on Thursday (16 January), Mumbai police released a picture of the accused from the CCTV footage of the actor’s building. They believe the suspect used the fire escape to enter and exit the building.

  • He was reportedly then seen at Bandra station and may have boarded a local train towards Vasai-Virar, ANI reported. Police teams reportedly launched searches in Vasai, Nalasopara, and Virar.

  • While the suspect was seen in a black shirt in the CCTV footage, CCTVs in Bandra seemingly showed him near Lucky Junction dressed in a light blue shirt.

  • The accused likely travelled to Dadar and purchased a phone cover from a shop near the station before heading towards Kabutarkhana, police sources told Indian Express.

  • The accused was purportedly seen in CCTV cameras at the shop at 9.04 am on Thursday, hours after the incident in Khan’s house.

  • On Friday (17 January), reports claimed that a man was detained in Mumbai in connection to the attack on Khan but the police later dismissed these claims, adding that the person wasn’t connected to the attack on Saif Ali Khan.
