READING, Pa. – After a scoreless fourth quarter, Hood College Women’s basketball was defeated 58-50 by Alvernia in Tuesday night’s game.
Inside the Box Score
Chanelle Lee (Brunswick, Md./Saint John’s Catholic Prep) led the Blazers with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Kourtney Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch High School) scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and had a season-high four blocks.

How it Happened
Alvernia got on the board first, but Hood quickly responded. Maya Gordon (Towson, Md./Loch Raven High School) got the Blazers going by knocking down back-to-back three pointers. Once Alvernia tried to answer, Lee made a midrange jump shot to extend Hood’s narrow lead. Serenity Ritchie (Martinsburg, W.V./Martinsburg High School) entered the game and immediately made an impact. She blocked a shot, then Gordon gathered the rebound to find Taylor for an easy fastbreak layup. The Golden Wolves made a shot from deep, then Ritchie matched it with one of her own. Alvernia strung together a couple of stops and made a layup to go up 15-13, after the first ten minutes.
Johnson could not be stopped in the beginning of the second quarter; she scored six points in about two minutes. Gordon made another three pointer to help Hood reclaim the lead. Alvernia tried to respond but then Lee made her presence felt. She went on a run in which she scored eight of her 14 points. Johnson and Taylor continued to get the looks they wanted and make high-percentage shots in the painted area. The Golden Wolves offense entered a lull, and they went into halftime trailing 35-27.
Defense led to points on the offensive end for the Blazers. Taylor seemed impossible to get around and snatched three steals in the third quarter alone. Tam Stanford (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) got in on the defensive effort with a steal as well. Lee and Johnson continued to have their way in the paint. After a Golden Wolves response, Taylor got in the mix too and made a tough layup after one of her steals. Amya Pulley (Reistertown, Md./Western Tech) entered the contest and made a layup ten seconds later to put the Blazers up 50-39, as the final frame approached.
The fourth quarter belonged to Alvernia. The Golden Wolves won the final ten minutes of the game 19-0. Hood fought hard but turnovers made it impossible for them to generate offense and close-out the game. In the end, Alvernia won 58-50.
