João Fonseca Dominates Elmer Moller

João Fonseca started with a win at the Mutua Madrid Open, collecting a 6-2, 6-3 rout of Danish qualifier Elmer Moller on Manolo Santana Stadium.
One year after becoming the tournament’s youngest match winner, Fonseca headed into Madrid fresh off a month-long break after Miami’s third round, and he produced a rock-solid performance.
Moller is one to watch, but Fonseca, having grown up on clay stepped up aggressively on second-serve returns, allowing him to dictate rallies, and he’s got quite a bit more experience on tour despite being 3 years younger.
Fonseca’s ability to absorb Moller’s heavy backhand (his trademark shot) and redirect it with power overwhelmed the 21-year-old, who entered on a six-match win streak after the Oeiras Challenger title.
Over the two sets, the Brazilian created 13 break point chances, converting four, and didn’t face a single break point on his own serve to progress comfortably.
His win sets up a second-round clash with No. 11 seed Tommy Paul, where he’ll chase his third Top 20 scalp of 2025, having beaten Andrey Rublev and Ugo Humbert earlier this year.
I love playing on clay. I was born on the clay, so I like to play on it, even with altitude. I like to focus on my serves and play aggressive, so feeling good this week. Me and my team felt it was a time to rest a little bit, focus, be at home, rest mentally. Then come here to do the clay season. Very happy with this win today. Fonseca on his win.
Norrie Survives Landaluce

Cameron Norrie clawed his way past 19-year-old Spanish wildcard Martin Landaluce 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-4on Arantxa Sanchez Stadium, saving a match point to keep his Madrid campaign alive.
It doesn’t seem that long ago that Norrie was comfortably inside the top 10, but he’s now slipped to 91st after a poor 18 months.
Mired in a 7-9 win-loss record for the season before the match, he had to lean on experience to outlast the home favourite in a 2-hour 42-minute battle.
Like Carreno Busta yesterday, Landaluce was backed by a raucous Madrid crowd, and he seized the first set 7-6(4), capitalising on his aggressive baseline play.
Norrie stared down the barrel of a gun in the second set, facing a match point on serve at 4-5. But he’s always been the gritty type of player with excellent cardio, and he dug in to hold before breaking to capture the set.
The third set saw Norrie harness momentum, breaking in game nine to seal the 6-4 win and set up a second-round clash with Jiri Lehecka.
