Suns weigh Kevin Durant trade, roster retooling options

The upcoming offseason is shaping up to be a critical period for the Phoenix Suns, with several major decisions potentially reshaping the team’s direction.
According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, the first domino to fall will likely be the hiring of a new head coach. Once that position is filled, the organization may begin seriously evaluating trade possibilities for star forward Kevin Durant.
While Smith suggests that the Suns should consider a full rebuild, he believes they are more inclined to retool the roster around franchise cornerstone Devin Booker rather than start from scratch.
If the team decides to part ways with Durant, the return package would ideally include multiple rotation-level players on smaller contracts, which would improve roster depth and flexibility.
In addition, such a deal could bring back future draft picks to help restock a draft cupboard that’s been thinned by previous trades.
Another smaller but still notable decision the front office must make involves Vasilije Micić’s $8.1 million team option. Smith points out that picking up the option would provide another mid-sized contract that could be useful in trade negotiations.
However, if the Suns decline the option, they could realize substantial luxury tax savings, which may influence the choice depending on the team’s broader cap strategy.
In summary, the Suns face a pivotal offseason in which they’ll weigh whether to take a bold new direction or fine-tune their existing core, with Durant’s future and Micić’s contract among the key decisions on the table.
