
Srinagar- Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday announced the winter vacation schedule for schools of the Kashmir valley and the winter zone of the Jammu region.
School Education Department (SED) Secretary Ram Niwas Sharma in an order said that the vacations for Pre-primary (Balvatika) classes shall commence from November-26 to February-28-2026.
In case of middle classes upto 8th standard, Sharma said that the vacations shall be observed from December-01 to February-28.
It also said that the winter break for 9th to 12th standard shall commence from December-11 to February-22.
SED also said that all Teaching faculty shall remain available for any academic activity during the vacation period.
“The Teaching staff shall report back to their respective schools on February-20-2026 for making arrangements regarding opening of schools,” reads the order.
SED said that any default on the part of the Heads of Institutions or Teaching staff in observance of the above schedule shall attract strict action under the Rules.
Cold Wave Tightens Grip On Kashmir
The cold wave sweeping across Kashmir intensified on Tuesday as night temperatures in most parts of the valley dipped well below the freezing point, officials said.
Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 3.1 degrees Celsius, marking the second coldest night of the season. The city had witnessed its coldest night on Monday when temperatures touched minus 3.2 degrees, according to MET officials.
In south Kashmir, Shopian remained the coldest location with a low of minus 5.4 degrees, followed by Pulwama which settled at minus 5.0 degrees.
Pahalgam registered a minimum of minus 4.4 degrees, while the ski destination Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded minus 1.2 degrees.
The high altitude Zojila Pass, which connects the valley with Ladakh, experienced extreme conditions as temperatures dropped to minus 16 degrees.
