Bollywood Hungama was among the first ones to confirm that SS Rajamouli’s upcoming grand flick has been titled Varanasi. The announcement event was held in Ramoji Rao Film City, Hyderabad and it was attended by SS Rajamouli and also the lead actors – Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran. However, a few days after the event, director CH Subba Reddy filed a formal complaint with the Telugu Film Producers Council, stating that he had already registered the same title more than two years ago. Hence, he objected to SS Rajamouli using the same title.

It has now come to light that the issue has been resolved. According to reports and buzz in the trade down South, the film has now been renamed as Rajamouli’s Varanasi. Trade sources further state that the name of the film in the other versions, that is, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and English, will be the same as before – Varanasi.
An industry insider said, “The name ‘Varanasi’ has already got associated with SS Rajamouli’s film, more so after the launch. The event was widely watched on JioHotstar; it was probably the first time that an Indian film was announced in this grand fashion. Crores were spent on the ground as well for the event. Hence, Varanasi has now got deeply stuck with the project and naming it Rajamouli’s Varanasi makes sense. At the same time, it also resolves the issue.”
According to the registration document with the Telugu Film Producer’s Council, the title of ‘Vaaranasi’ was registered by Rama Bramha Hanuma Creations, a company led by CH Subba Reddy, on July 24, 2023. The production house then renewed the title rights from June 24, 2025, to July 23, 2026. A picture of the document signed by the Telugu Film Producers Council and granting the title rights to Reddy’s banner surfaced on the internet after the controversy broke out.
