The long-awaited second season of David Fincher’s “Mindhunter” affirms the program as Netflix’s strongest drama. Even more ambitious and mesmerizing than the first season, this nine-episode installment concerns something that crime programs rarely ever attempt to capture: the fact that we can never know exactly every detail and motive. If the first season was about a team of people trying to find a better way to profile murderers, the second is about how much will always remain unknown. Fincher and his writers very purposefully filter the fictional part of their story through cases with variables that remain divisive to this day, especially that of the Atlanta Child Murders, for which Wayne Williams was convicted but many consider unsolved in its entirety. If season one was about trying to get closer to certainty, season two is about the truth that doubt will always remain. Doubt that the murderer didn’t get away; doubt that we can truly know our partners or children; doubt that anyone can ever be certain of the size of the gap between us and the dark side.
The season picks up right after the end of season one with Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) shaken after the panic attack he had after visiting Edmund Kemper. He puts himself back together quickly after learning that the Behavioral Sciences Unit he’s heading with Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) has a new ally in a position of power, Ted Gunn (Michael Cerveris). With more freedom to do their work, the unit dives back into interviewing serial killers in an effort to uncover their motives and pathologies. The opening of the season focuses a lot on ritual, especially as Tench is called in to investigate the BTK Killer (who we see even more of in prologue sequences like last season). Why do killers take souvenirs? Why do they return to the scene of the crime? Why do they write letters and give themselves names? And why do some victims become killers? Early episodes include interviews with people like Tex Watson, who killed on Manson’s orders, and Elmer Wayne Henley, who was almost a victim of Dean Corll’s before becoming his lover and procuring victims for him. How do you profile these men who were more persuaded to become serial killers than fit the Ford model of sexual sadism?
All three of our protagonists get pulled away from their work by different forces. We spend a lot of time in a new relationship with Wendy in a subplot that doesn’t quite pay off like I wished it would, but does offer Torv a chance to do solid character work with a part that’s still underwritten. More effective is the arc of Bill Tench this season, which I won’t remotely spoil but fits in perfectly with the show's overall themes about how difficult it can be to truly know someone’s motives. And this theme echoes in season two’s story of Holden Ford, which tells the investigation of the Atlanta Child Murders in 1981.
From 1979 to 1981, young boys were being murdered in Atlanta. In the show’s version of this case, which is slightly different than the real one, Holden Ford assists with every aspect of the investigation, being drawn into the case by a group of mothers with missing children (John Douglas, the inspiration for Ford, did notoriously profile the case but the quasi-fictional Ford feels far more hands-on than reality). Using what he’s learned, Ford quickly becomes convinced in his profile of the suspect as a young black male, despite evidence that the KKK may be involved. And so the question that lingers from there on out is if he is pushing the investigation to meet his profile or if his methods are actually solving the case. In the real world, Wayne Williams was charged with two murders, and officials closed the investigation, but someone, possibly Williams, possibly not, killed at least 26 other people. There's still a great deal of controversy around the case.
Once again, “Mindhunter” is as tight as television gets in terms of craft. The first three episodes were directed by Fincher himself, marking his first work behind the camera since the last season. The stunning mid-section is directed by Andrew Dominik (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) and the season is closed out by Carl Franklin (“One False Move”). There’s no fat on this season, even though so much of it defies what we've come to expect from a crime show. The biggest difference is the lack of visualization of murder. We see crime photos. We hear interviews. But we don’t see recreations of crime. A majority of the approaches to this story would include visualization, but “Mindhunter” is stronger by keeping viewers with the POV and knowledge base of its protagonists. The interview scenes are so vibrant—and often based on real interviews—that we can sense the danger even more strongly than if the show tried to bring it to life with actors.
Speaking of actors, they’re all once again great, but the season belongs to McCallany, who captures a man stuck in a nightmare. Season one Bill Tench was a bit of a straight man, the Joe Friday to Holden’s more extreme tendencies, and he’s still the more old-fashioned of the two, but McCallany finds the vulnerability in the stoic demeanor. This season Tench goes through one of those situations in which work comes way too close to home. It first seems a bit overwritten, but McCallany sells it and then it ties back in a way that feels thematically satisfying.
Crime shows are a billion-dollar business, but most of them exist to comfort us. Sure, there may be grisly activity on something like “Criminal Minds,” but the bad guy usually gets caught. That’s one of the reasons shows like that are so reliable—people like closure. The real world doesn’t give us much of that. And that’s what makes “Mindhunter” so captivating. It defies traditional storytelling, accepting the unknown in ways that remind me of Fincher’s masterpiece, “Zodiac.” Holden Ford and Robert Graysmith are men who seek answers but become myopic through their obsession. Great fiction has been written about people who find the abyss looking back at them when they stare at it for too long. That was season one of "Mindhunter." Season two asks: what if we're all in the abyss, just fumbling around in the dark, never quite sure what we can hold onto?
Whole season screened for review.
Gurinder Chadha’s “Blinded by the Light” contains a cinematic sight that’s as timeless a song—watching a character have their life changed forever by discovering a piece of art that feels like it’s always been waiting for them. In the case of Chadha’s film, that art is Bruce Springsteen, and the deeply moved character is Javed, a teenage British Asian struggling to find his voice as a writer, and his place in the world, until he listens to Springsteen for the first time. Based on the memoir Greetings from Bury Park by Springsteen super-fan Sarfraz Manzoor, “Blinded by the Light” is an ebullient, song-filled celebration of Javed’s newfound passion, and reminds you with its personal story as to why Springsteen’s dramatic, poetic, hopeful music reigns. (Be sure to read Sheila O'Malley's review of the film here.)
Javed is played by Viveik Kalra, who makes his debut in film acting in this lead role, carrying a story about identity, culture, and the Boss through numerous triumphant, albeit unabashedly feel-good sequences. RogerEbert.com sat down with Kalra to discuss the film's world premiere at Sundance last January, how he handled the responsibility of leading his debut feature project, his long term career goals and more.
I remember seeing this film at Sundance, where Gurinder [Chadha] lead the entire theater in a singalong of Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart.” I’ll never forget that.
She is just an amazing person to be around. That wasn’t mentioned to us before, or anything. I think she just did it on the spot, which is an amazing thing to do. Just to think, You know what, I’m going to sing in front of all these people, and everyone joined in. Which was lovely, such a wonderful sort of experiment to be a part of. And she’s a lovely director to work with. She’s a confident woman, and has an incredible energy.
And for your first feature to be around that, that’s a high bar to work with.
I think in ways she lifts you up and helps you to feel more confident, which is amazing. She’s an actor’s director, and she makes you feel good and tells you what you need to do, and this and that. And then she comes to set with more energy than everyone else on set. But to come to set and have more energy, people my age a little bit younger or a little bit older, people who were 17, 16, and other people who were like 20, 22. And she made more energy than everyone, every day.
What was your audition for this movie? Did you sing?
I did sing; I sang “Born to Run.” Which, I didn’t know at the time was one of the most iconic songs of all time.
How do you wrap your head around performing the scene where Javed hears Springsteen for the first time?
You know what was wonderful: that was sort of happening to me simultaneously as a person and as an actor as well. I hadn’t listened to any Bruce beforehand. I’d heard his name, but I hadn’t heard his music. So to have that revelation, that realization that this man’s music is actually blooming amazing, and at the same point playing this character that has this revelation, it sort of makes things and let things work out in a way that I couldn’t have predicted. Maybe if I’d heard Bruce before, the sort of euphoria you see on the character’s face in the experience and in Bruce wouldn’t have been the same, but maybe because I was listening to Bruce for the first time as well as a person, that came through like that.
Has the experience of this film made you more eager to be in more film projects?
I’ve got exciting things coming in the pipeline and stuff, which is incredible to be able to say. I guess technically it’s sort of very first-world job to have, and you know you see that in the film, through the character who wants to be a writer, but his dad is going, “What are you talking about? Writing is not a job.” And which I think is sort of wonderful to say as a character, because there’s no like, hatred in there. There’s no going, “You shouldn’t be a writer because this, this, this, this.” For me, what was wonderful about the actor who played my father in the film, [Kulvinder Ghir], is that he’s not a bad guy, he just comes from a different place and a different time, and having an actor like that who can portray things like that wonderful nuance, was amazing. And taking generations past and presenting them on a massive screen and internalizing them in film and uplifting them.
Did you work with Kulvinder to create chemistry? You have so many strong scenes of him getting so close to crushing Javed’s dreams.
Kulvinder was really, he’s just a great actor and a great sort of person to act with. I had rehearsals with Kulvinder, I had rehearsal with family and Shazia, and Mira, and the mother. I had so many rehearsals prior to filming, which was amazing because it helped get everything …. I think the most sort of intimidating rehearsal was the one with Hayley [Atwell]. Hayley came in for a rehearsal, and I was obviously massively intimidated because she was like a big sort of well known person. And coming into that room, I was madly intimidated. But she was really nice, and that made everything so much easier. The rehearsal process was just so nice because it helped you get across things to see what worked and what didn’t work, and getting on set.
The thing with Gurinder is that she’s a very generous director and a person, in that we did get on set, and then she went, “Oh, that’s not working,” but we’d done this before, I got to figure out my journey and we helped each other, like she helped me prepare for the part, and she was just really helpful. I couldn’t think of a better director to have worked with me on a specific project for this specific part, because it’s like she really helped me distance myself from that character and that person. I’m from different circumstances than that character. I remember she took me behind a monitor when we were filming, and she pointed at the screen and she said, “That’s not you. That’s Javed.” And I thought that was a rather wonderful thing to say and that helped me sort of separate the two.
Who are some actors whose careers you look up to?
When I see … well, put it simply, when I see a brown face on the TV, I’m watching. I think, I can’t imagine what it would have been like for the generation before mine, but I don’t think particularly remember seeing many Asian faces on TV growing up. And I remember seeing a couple, but you look at them in hindsight, retrospectively, and those characters that were played by probably good actors were stamped into two-dimensional-ness, which is very sad. So, now that there’s an influence of stuff with Asian people, and Black people, it’s incredible. I’m very excited to be a part of this thing, because somehow, we are now marketable, which is amazing. And an amazing thought.
It’s so unfortunate that it has to be be put like that.
Yes—this is marketable, which is amazing! But you see films of course, like everyone and their grandma has seen “Black Panther,” and just the cultural impact that had as a film was just amazing. I remember going to see that with pretty sure every Asian person I knew, and I thought it was just a wonderful thing.
Especially with this movie, where it’s about a Springsteen fan but it’s not about New Jersey white kid, people are encouraged more and more to identify more outside with other perspectives.
I think there is more of a realization now that you don’t have to be this one thing. People are opening their minds to be people being more than one thing, the person that drives you to work in the morning is not just a driver, they’re more than that. Same with the person who serves you in a restaurant, they’re not just a waiter, they’re more than that. That, what I’m talking about now, is their job title, but what I think has happened is that people who had been defined by stereotypical things about their race ... I think that will slowly but steadily sort of dissipate.
Do you have any long term goals in your acting career?
I just want to do good stuff. And I think it will be stuff that’s varied, and stuff that interests me. What’s very important for me is, like with this film, I think anything that I’m involved in that is remotely cultural, what’s important for me is to be uplifting to that. Shine a light on that, in a positive manner. Because, me, myself, Sarfraz Manzoor, and Gurinder Chadha, we’ve been given the opportunity to showcase this story of a British Asian and his family, and so it’s important to … if you’re going to internalize that, internalize that in as positive light as can humanly be. And not say that it’s faultless—point out the faults, but then uplift it.
The good boys of “Good Boys” try very, very hard to be bad. But despite their adult aspirations over the course of a wild couple of days, it’s their sweet-natured innocence that ultimately sees them through every misadventure.
That’s the inherent conflict—and the chief source of humor—in director Gene Stupnitsky’s extremely R-rated feature debut. The trio of sixth graders at the film’s center are shockingly profane and adorably clueless at once. They know just enough to be dangerous, but they’re also smart enough to find their way out of real danger—over and over again. And while the premise eventually grows thin and the jokes turn repetitive by the third act, the chemistry between the movie’s three stars is both lively and substantial enough to keep the antics enjoyable.
The script from Stupnitsky and his writing partner, Lee Eisenberg—whose previous collaborations include “Year One,” “Bad Teacher” and several episodes of “The Office”—captures with squirm-inducing accuracy the heightened sense of drama that exists in middle school, where every social interaction carries major stakes. It’s a time in your life that sucks no matter who or where you are—you’re not a kid anymore and you’re not yet a teenager, but you are a jumble of confusing hormones. Stupnitsky and Eisenberg have created a trio of distinct characters to navigate this minefield, and the actors playing them bring them refreshingly to life.
The preternaturally gifted Jacob Tremblay plays the group’s de factor leader, the hopeless romantic Max. Brady Noon is Thor, a would-be tough guy with a love of hair products and musical theater. And scene-stealer Keith L. Williams plays Lucas, the biggest and tallest of the three but also the most guileless. With his open, angelic face, deadpan delivery and keen sense of physical comedy, Williams is the most delightful of them all and he needs to be cast in everything starting right now.
The convoluted plot finds these slightly nerdy kids ditching class and scrambling all over town to replace Max’s dad’s drone, which they broke while trying to spy on some teenagers down the street (Molly Gordon and Midori Francis). If they don’t replace it by the time Max’s father (Will Forte, among the many comedians in the supporting cast) gets home from a work trip, Max will be grounded. That means he won’t be able to attend the cool kids’ kissing party, where he’d hoped to have his first kiss with the sweet, shy girl he has a crush on, Brixlee (Millie Davis). (One nice touch: Even the so-called popular kids put on a grown-up act, with their leader, the diminutive Soren [Izaac Wang], hilariously spouting street-wise aphorisms like, “You feel me, dog?” and “I ride or die for my squad, too.”)
Max, Thor and Lucas’ antics—which involve porn, drugs, stolen beer, sex toys and an especially alluring CPR doll—escalate until they reach an all-out brawl at a fraternity house.
These are kids who drop F-bombs left and right, but they also giggle as they ride their bikes through the sprinklers. And for a while, Stupnitsky finds a charming balance between who they really are and who they’re pretending to be. But pretty soon, it becomes clear that this is a one-joke movie—Oh my god, these cute 12-year-olds are swearing!—and once that one joke has run its course, it feels like a struggle just to reach the 90-minute mark.
But “Good Boys” aims to be about more than just graphic dialogue and gross-out humor. It also depicts the bittersweet moment when you realize you’re growing apart from the childhood playmates with whom you’d promised to be friends for life. Max, Thor and Lucas refer to themselves with great solemnity as the Beanbag Boys, and they try to fight off the nagging sensation that perhaps their interests are changing and they don’t have as much in common as they once did. It’s the same kind of emotionally truthful premise that drove the misfits-on-a-rampage high school comedy “Superbad,” which “Good Boys” resembles in myriad ways, including the presence of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg as producers.
There’s an honest heart beneath the racy laughs. If only sixth-graders themselves could actually see it.
There's a moment in "Blinded by the Light," a new film from writer/director Gurinder Chadha ("Bend It Like Beckham," "Bride & Prejudice"), when the young protagonist, a kid named Javed (Viveik Kalra), watches the video for Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" for the first time. Javed is obsessed with Springsteen's music, but the look on his face as he drinks in Springsteen's powerful meat-and-potatoes stage presence is a visual echo of the awestruck look on Courtney Cox's face as Springsteen pulls her out of the audience in the same video (which was directed by Brian de Palma). It's more than excitement; what Javed feels hits at a deeper level. There's a surfeit of feeling on Javed's face, so perfectly evocative of what it feels like -- particularly as a teenager -- to suddenly get really into something - music, a movie, a celebrity - and that something hits you in just exactly the right way at exactly the right time. It's like having a house fall on top of you. Or mainlining a powerful drug. You never see the world in quite the same way again. That's what Bruce Springsteen did for journalist Sarfraz Manzoor, whose memoir Greetings From Bury Park: Race. Religion. Rock'n'Roll is the basis for "Blinded by the Light" (Manzoor co-wrote the script). "Blinded by the Light," at its very best, captures the experience of being a fan, the pure exhilaration of it, and the sense of your vision opening out to vistas beyond your horizon.
Set in the 1980s in the small town of Luton, Javed's family struggles to make ends meet in the crushing recession of the late Thatcher era, battling economic strife, rising nationalism, and racist attacks. Javed's mother (Meera Ganatra) works out of their home as a seamstress, and his father (Kulvinder Ghir) works at a nearby factory. Layoffs loom. Parental expectation weighs heavily on Javed, who hides not just his dream of being a writer from his parents, but almost every other aspect of his personality. He's not allowed to have a social life, a girlfriend, independence. (Javed's father says to him at one point, "Pakistanis do not go to parties." Javed replies, "I thought I was British.") His best friend Matt (Dean-Charles Chapman) is swept up in the New Wave scene, and Javed writes lyrics for Matt's songs, feeling frustrated and trapped.
Bruce Springsteen isn't a presence at all in these early sequences, an accurate representation of what it was like in the early 1980s teenage music scene. Maybe your dad had Born to Run, or Nebraska in his collection. But Springsteen was from the past, he had nothing to do with "now." "Now" was Madonna and Prince and Pet Shop Boys and Tiffany and Michael Jackson. That is, until the 1984 juggernaut of Born in the U.S.A., filled with catchy tunes, but seething with political and social anger. The album is a real rager, verbalizing the loss, hardship, and poverty of the American working-class as Springsteen saw it all around him. (The xenophobes who consider "Born in the U.S.A." their anthem clearly haven't listened to the actual lyrics of the song).
One day, a Sikh classmate named Roops (Aaron Phagura) hands Javed a couple of Springsteen cassettes, sensing the troubled Javed may need it. As Javed listens to "Dancing in the Dark," his entire inner life explodes in a moment of revelation, reflected in the outer world as a gigantic wind storm wreaking havoc in his neighborhood (the Great Storm of 1987). It's like Springsteen himself created that apocalyptic storm. As Javed listens to “The Promised Land,” Springsteen's lyrics float through the air, projected onto the sides of buildings, walls, the music literally actualized in the air, in Javed's world. Javed never knew music could be like this, that music -- made by an American guy from some place called New Jersey -- could speak so directly to him, the son of immigrants in far-away England. Javed becomes an evangelist for Bruce. He dresses like him. He commandeers the school radio station. He plasters his wall with posters. His parents think he has lost his mind.
People make fun of teenagers for this kind of thing, but the emotions of fandom are so pure! The root of the word "fanatic" is "fanum" -- meaning "temple," a place where zealots come to worship. Every fan has their deity, whether it's the teenagers in Robert Zemeckis' "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" trying to score tickets to the Beatles' appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," or the Elvis-obsessed Japanese teenagers wandering around Memphis in Jim Jarmusch's "Mystery Train." Javed's discovery of Springsteen's music leads him into all kinds of unexpected terrain, a tentative romance with a classmate (Nell Williams), conflict with his father, and tension with his best mate Matt.
There are exuberant sequences in "Blinded by the Light" that are basically from out of a movie musical. Entire village squares erupt into coordinated dance movements. It's cheesy, but it's infectious too. If you haven't been a fan of something to such a degree that it transforms your whole entire world, you're missing out! Springsteen allowed use of his capacious catalog, so his songs dominate throughout the film. Chadha's approach is open-minded and affectionate, and it's also filled with sharp insights about growing up the child of immigrants. There's a great sequence involving Javed's sister Shazia (Nikita Mehta), who is not quite as obedient as she seems to be on the surface. Like "Bend It Like Beckham," "Blinded by the Light" is very smart on the tensions within an immigrant family, the push of the younger generation to assimilate, the fears of the older traditional generation of loss of their culture.
All of the actors are wonderful, but Kulvinder Ghir is especially poignant, bringing a potent blend of gravitas, pain and humor to his performance. This strong proud man doesn't understand the Springsteen thing. He doesn't like what he doesn't understand. He fears losing his job. Seeing him humiliated is extremely painful. The entire family is affected by the father-son clashes. Among its many other positive attributes, "Blinded by the Light" is an emotional father-and-son relationship drama. Holding it all together is Bruce Springsteen's music.
Recently, my sister and I took her two kids, ages five and three, to a local pool. On our way there, they chanted from their car seats in the back, "Fire Song! Fire Song! Fire Song!" I assumed it was a kid's song learned in pre-school. Turns out they were requesting "Dancing in the Dark," which they call "Fire Song" ("You can't start a fire/You can't start a fire without a spark"). The kids heard the song once on the radio, and became obsessed. They know all the words. They wonder if "Bruce" can come over and play a song in the backyard. The weirdest thing is that the "Bruce" thing was not imposed on them by my sister. The kids chose him all on their own. The torch has been passed.
Water, water, everywhere. That’s your very capsule review of “Aquarela,” a new film from Russian documentarian Victor Kossakovsky.
The movie begins, though, and for a very long time stays with, ice. Ice on a body of water that’s too thin to support the weight of a car. The movie doesn’t tell you exactly where it is at any given time, but here it’s with some police figures who drill and hammer through ice and then very gingerly try to hoist a submerged car. As the filmmaker widens his perspective, we understand the presence of a lake, or perhaps a bay, on which lunatics speed their vehicles. He actually captures, at 94 frames a second, one of those cars going under broken ice. Moving in for a closer view, we come to understand that one of the passengers has drowned. On the shore, a large village building is burning.
No narrator will come to our rescue here. Without any expositional assistance, we are going to spend the next hour and twenty minutes and change watching—and hearing—the awesome implacable power of water.
For some time people disappear from the camera’s view. Icebergs fall off of glaciers and into water, and rise up again, the noise accompanying them rather like an earthquake.
Sometimes the camera will just sit between ocean and sky, or hover above churning, roiling water. The abstract patterns it creates are dizzying and terrifying.
They get more terrifying when the sky turns gray. A sailing yacht is seen as a storm starts churning up. Two crew members turn wheels, climb masts, executing their moves with deliberation and trying to avoid haste. While knowing they need to work quickly. All this is conveyed without words.
Some will recognize Miami as it is pummeled by Hurricane Irma. Here one of the courageous (and, one has to say, foolhardy) filmmakers ventures outside and runs up a boulevard, its traffic lights hanging by wires after being unmoored from their posts, palm trees getting their fronds ripped off by the brutal winds.
People turn up again, in what appears to be a flooding cave. Here the amazing imagery attains a level of terrifying abstractness.
This is a purely sensationalistic cinematic experience that paradoxically encourages reflection and contemplation. Although the use of some (admittedly pretty good) heavy metal music on the soundtrack feels like a bit of overreaching. The guitar riffs rhyme with the growth of a tidal wave to such an extent you’re almost waiting for a gravelly bass voice to announce “EXTREEEEEEEEME WEATHERRRRR!!!!” The genuine awesome on display here doesn’t need that cheese injection.
Starting out as an investigation into whether United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld was murdered rather than dying accidentally in a plane crash in 1961, then spiraling outward into a probe of various strange individuals and organizations, “Cold Case Hammarskjöld” is a tremendously absorbing film, a documentary that plays like a first-rate thriller hinging on key issues of the Cold War and African decolonization.
I almost wrote “purported documentary” because when I came out of my first viewing of the film, I was unsure of whether parts of it may have been invented or embellished for dramatic (or sensationalistic) purposes. Partly, that’s due not just to the fact that some of this tale does seem fantastical, but also because filmmaker Mads Brügger, a Danish journalist, keeps the viewer off balance by playing with, even joking about that quality. Early on, he allows, “This could either be the world’s biggest murder mystery or the world’s most idiotic conspiracy theory.”
Having seen the film again and read up on it and the issues it evokes, I’m now convinced that it’s a real documentary, not a fake one. One aspect of the film, though, is constructed or staged for dramatic effect. Repeatedly through the film we see Brügger in an African hotel room dictating his evolving narrative to two female African secretaries, who alternate with each other and frequently ask him questions. Not only a way of helping clarify a very complicated story, this device, according to the filmmaker, came about because it “dawned on me that I was potentially working on a film without any women or black Africans.”
Fair enough. And whether or not the two women are actresses or actual secretaries, they fulfill their roles admirably. But it says something that in this tale of intrigue in modern Africa the only Africans who play prominent roles—villainous ones, in some cases—are white South Africans; otherwise the director and his accomplice, white-haired Swedish private investigator Göran Björkdahl, spend years in Europe and Africa conducting interviews with, as Brügger puts it, “elderly, white, liver-spotted men.”
Most of these dappled gents have some connection to the mystery that Brügger starts with. Hammarskjöld, a Swedish aristocrat, was a towering figure in mid-20th century world affairs. Heading up the U.N. beginning in 1953, he took a special interest in helping newly independent African countries wrest free from their former colonial masters. Naturally, this stance earned him many enemies. When the plane he was in went down in central Africa on September 18, 1961, he was trying to negotiate a peace agreement in the Congo region, which had been ruthlessly exploited by Belgium for centuries (for details on this horror, see Adam Hochschild’s superb book King Leopold’s Ghost and the documentary of the same title).
Although the crash was officially blamed on pilot error, foul play was suspected from the first, and Brügger and Björkdahl uncover evidence—including interviews with Africans who witnessed the crash— suggesting the diplomat’s plane was shot down by another. They even identity a British-Belgian fighter pilot they think carried out the assassination (other researchers, however, have pointed to a French mercenary). And then there’s this chilling detail: a photo of Hammarskjöld’s body with an ace of spades resting on the collar—the calling card (literally), we are told, of the CIA.
But midway through the film, Hammarskjöld’s death opens onto a larger subject that commands the rest of the narrative. The connection is the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that South Africa mounted in the wake of apartheid’s end, and in which certain papers were revealed that linked Hammarskjöld’s death to a group known the South African Institute for Maritime Research. Called SAIMR for short, it may have had something to do with looking for sunken treasure at some point, but in more recent history it seems to have been a mercenary outfit dealing in coups, assassinations and other nefarious business, and funded, supposedly, by intelligence agencies such as MI6 and the CIA.
The filmmakers become fascinated with a SAIMR leader named Keith Maxwell, a self-styled “commodore” who always wore white except when he donned an 18th century admiral’s uniform complete with tricorn hat and flowing coat. Maxwell, who died some years ago, was supposedly involved in Hammarskjöld’s murder and was even photographed at the scene before investigators arrived. But in delving into his history, the filmmakers come upon an even more scandalous charge: that he posed as a doctor inoculating Africans against AIDS in the 1990s when in fact he was spreading the disease in an effort to eradicate blacks.
This accusation is of course explosive, and as an end title in the film states, AIDS experts say it is practically impossible. But is there no truth to it? In the film’s last quarter, Brügger and Björkdahl light upon “the guy we’ve been looking for six years.” He’s a former SAIMR operative named Alexander Jones, a hardboiled military type who is ready to spill the beans on the group because he wants “closure.” His interview is the most fascinating part of the film. I kept thinking, “If this guy’s an actor, he deserves an Oscar.”
Jones gives the filmmakers plenty of detail regarding Maxwell, the structure and operations of SAIMR (he says it involved 5000 people at one point), and the murders and other dirty business it was involved in across Africa. As for the AIDS story, he confirms it. But a New York Times story of Jan. 27, 2019, says that the filmmakers’ notes indicate Jones denied any knowledge of the AIDS project in pre-interviews, but by the time the camera was turned on, his testimony “evolved” to the point of including familiarity with things the filmmakers had told him about.
In other words, the whole thing ends up a bit murky. But then, this entire area of history is composed of endless layers of murk, and sometimes the best any investigator can do is to shine a light through a few layers, and leave the viewer to contemplate the many questions that remain.
Footnotes: Last week the New York Times reported that the government of Sweden, after asking the governments of the U.S., Britain and other countries to open their files on the Hammarskjöld case, has refused to open its own files “on grounds they are classified under national security laws.” Meanwhile the U.N. is mounting another investigation into the case which is due to be released next month “though it may be delayed,” according to the Times.
In an early scene in “Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles,” the visionary filmmaker Luis Buñuel flashes back to a formative day in his childhood. As a young boy, he is racing to catch up with a group of drummers in a square. He falls, his hands bloodied. When he finally gets to the front of the group and begins drumming, his blood splashes the drum. If it were in a traditional biopic, the very literal commingling of the human with the artistic may feel too direct, but it sets the stage for what’s to come in a very nontraditional telling of film history. Watching this unique film, I was struck by something Brad Bird told me years ago, which could basically be paraphrased as “animation is a form, not a genre.” The fact that this site is reviewing an American animated sequel to a film based on a mobile video game (“The Angry Birds Movie 2”) and this Spanish production about the filming of a barely-seen short documentary film in the career of Luis Buñuel in the same week could be the greatest proof yet of Bird’s statement, especially since these two films, which couldn’t be further apart in terms of purpose and tone, are both getting the same star rating.
Luis Buñuel’s 1933 “Las Hurdes: Tierra Sin Pan” is a fascinating short documentary that the filmmaker shot decades before he would become an international icon, at a tumultuous time both in his career and the fate of his country. As the Spanish Civil War lurks on the horizon, Buñuel struggles to find his identity as a filmmaker, coming off the success of “Un Chien Andalou” (but the shadow of Salvador Dali) and the controversy that greeted its follow-up, “L’Age d’Or” in 1930, a film which got him branded a heretic. Buñuel chose to go to a mountainous region of Spain that was so remote that it had only recently had a road constructed to it and discovered how to make bread (hence the title of his new project, which translates to "Las Hurdes: Land without Bread"). At least according to this film, the Las Hurdes region proved a fertile location for Buñuel’s interests as a filmmaker and his surrealist bent. The animated film is intercut with footage of the actual documentary, and it’s a fascinating blend of the surreal and the realistic. The main source of income in this village is taking in orphaned children, for whom the government pays a subsidy. So there are kids everywhere, all of them incredibly poor, and generations of in-breeding has led to health issues, but no real medical help.
How Buñuel approaches his subjects becomes the main thrust of “Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles,” and the divisions that arise between him and his collaborators, including a producer friend who used lottery winnings to pay for the production. Is Buñuel mocking these people? And do his filmmaking needs outweigh the actual ones of the residents of Las Hurdes? Buñuel was notoriously and openly manipulative in the filmmaking. For example, when a goat doesn’t fall off a ridge to give the filmmaker the shot he wants, the crew shoots it. He reportedly covered a sick donkey with honey to have bees attack it and kill it.
If you’re thinking this is a lot of artistic philosophy for one animated film, you’re not wrong, but director Salvador Simó has a light touch that mingles surrealism with history lesson. He regularly returns to dreamscapes that Buñuel would admire, very rarely in a way that underlines the internal struggles of the filmmaker at the time but that highlight how his visions co-existed with his reality. At its best, “Buñuel and the Labyrinth of the Turtles” is as caught between dream and reality as the film that Buñuel made in the mountains of Spain. Assisted by a gorgeous score by Arturo Cardelús, it is a film that flows back and forth between animated vision and a more traditional story of process and filmmaking. Buñuel’s lottery-winning producer butts heads with the filmmaker and their relationship dominates the final minutes of the film in ways that I didn’t expect and I’m not sure completely works, but it does remind one of the legacy of a man who would soon become a victim of the Spanish Civil War.
Why tell this story now? And why do it in animated form? The latter question is partially answered by the surreal dreams that would be near-impossible on a small budget in live-action form, but it’s also I think because of how much the film-within-a-film played with the medium. As “Las Hurdes” blurred documentary and fiction, this film blurs what we traditionally expect from animation. As for why to tell this story, it’s all really there in an opening discussion about the impact of art and what is gained from dissecting it vs. just experiencing it. Questioning why we make art, and how specific chapters in the lives of some of our most influential artists shaped their entire careers, will never get old, especially for film lovers. And that’s true for whatever form, not just genre, that the art takes.
The laughless mess of “Sextuplets” proves that Marlon Wayans still has a big obstacle in the way of his comedic greatness—himself. You’d be better off streaming one of his potent, whip-silly episodes of his sitcom “Marlon” then picking this new movie on Netflix, which arrives today from director Michael Tiddes, of 2017’s much more enjoyable and clever “Naked.” In that Netflix project, Wayans spent most of a “Groundhog Day” plot scurrying around with no clothes on. But “Sextuplets,” a movie with multiple Marlon Wayans performances? Shrug. When Robin Williams keeps popping up in the film—on a TV screen, on a character's shirt, and even as a doctor’s name—it’s for a reason, as Wayans knows his gift for hamminess has the same potential as the beloved late comedian. But it’s all a sad reminder that while Wayans has a similar comedic energy and charisma, he needs better scriptwriters, stat.
As conceived by writers Marlon Wayans, Mike Glock, and Rick Alvarez, most of the comedic energy within “Sextuplets” is spent on flat character work and even more wholesale kooky sequences, as stapled together by chintzy idea of family. In the long history of the movies about unlikely family reunions, “Sextuplets” is one of the most blatantly indifferent, setting Wayans’ orphan Alan up to find his biological mother (and then the siblings he learns about) because it sounds like a good idea after all these years, so long as he’s back before his wife gives birth to his first kid. The movie doles out its siblings one underwhelming sequence at a time, and it all doesn’t build towards a sense of unity so much as exhaustion. It’s all too fitting that the last word heard in "Sextuplets" is “family,” followed up by someone making a fart sound.
Wayans handles his many characters with the same limits of care: he gives them a definitive physical appearance, a distinct way of speaking, and sometimes makes them discernible mostly by stereotypes. The comedy will write itself, or so he reckons, and scenes often have him heightening absurdity of any newly introduced sibling, while Alan takes some type of beating as a bland straight man. For example, Wayans plays Alan's sister Dawn as loud and abrasive as possible, mixing in Cardi B chirps in between her threats to fight someone. Then there’s brother Ethan, who is like Steve Harvey as a stereotypical 1970s pimp, gold teeth cap and all. Or, there’s the doughy and dorky Russell, the first sibling that Alan meets, who speaks out the side of his mouth and provides both the film's core fat jokes and the cereal product placement. For what egregious stereotypes the movie uses for its characters--a common jumping off point for Wayans' comedy—it still feels quarter-baked.
The filmmaking behind “Sextuplets” is notable—not in terms of the plethora B-roll of cars driving, and lazily designed scenes that punctuate on the same beat of someone suddenly getting hit, hard. But with multiple versions of Wayans on the screen at once, “Sextuplets” boasts impressive hair and make-up. There's also a seamlessness here in putting characters shot at different times in the same scene, an advancement for all comedians who want to keep playing various characters at once.
Hardly a road trip movie, or even a movie, “Sextuplets” can’t even be funny as a free-for-all for Wayans, who makes abundantly clear the difference between wackiness and cleverness. Everything is presented bluntly, and small doses of absurdity—such as the film’s fixation on jokes inspired by “The Rockford Files”—can’t even punch up the story. Here’s Marlon Wayans in many different costumes, the film wagers, and thinks that’s all we need. But there’s no heart beyond the dedication to his impersonations, and there’s no fun, either.
A child changes everything, or so the familiar parenting adage tells us. For the main character in Richard Linklater’s new film “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” becoming a parent not only changed her lifestyle; it seeped into her art, career and changed her as a person in the process. It’s a theme worth exploring deeply—especially as more women are sharing candid stories from the frontlines of motherhood—but unfortunately, it’s not given its proper due in the movie’s try-hard script.
As pieced together from voiceover narration and an unbelievably high-quality video essay, Bernadette Fox (Cate Blanchett) was once a rising star in the architecture world. However, after one crushing professional setback and a fraught transition into motherhood, she retreated into the confines of a stately old mansion in Seattle with her husband Elgie (Billy Crudup) and their precocious daughter, Bee (Emma Nelson). When the now teenaged Bee asks her parents for a trip to Antartica, it sets off a panic in the agoraphobic recluse, causing an avalanche of problems that sends her off on a journey towards self-rediscovery—without her family knowing quite where she’s taken off to.
Based on Maria Semple’s book of the same title, the movie version of “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” shifts the perspective of the story from Bee’s search for her runaway mom onto Bernadette’s shoulders. However, this character is not interested in making it easy for the audience to empathize with her. Linklater can’t seem to strike the right tone for Bernadette’s story, so in some moments, she’s comically ill-equipped to handle the slightest of domestic chores and foists a number of her personal tasks on an unseen digital assistant based in India. Then when her helplessness and anxiety are portrayed in a more tragic light, it leaves a guilty aftertaste for viewers who laughed at those earlier scenes. Add in Blanchett’s barbed performance as a woman on the edge of needing a mother’s little helper just to pick up her kid from school, and that’s yet another layer on the already conflicted movie. At times, Bernadette can be casually racist to her digital assistant and her holier-than-thou attitude towards just about everyone else feels less like a defense mechanism and more of a justification for treating others dreadfully. In her eyes, they don’t deserve better and that goes double for Bernadette’s arch-nemesis, her PTA-obsessed neighbor, Audrey (Kristen Wiig). It’s tiring keeping track of the movie’s number of mood swings.
Perhaps inadvertently, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” also becomes a study of a difficult artist who hates just about everyone who isn’t her daughter. Almost everyone else in the movie tolerates her because she’s an avowed genius in her field. Others (sometimes rightfully) despise her because of her behavior. But will the pass for creative men with bad attitudes be offered to Bernadette as well? Usually, what endears these kinds of prickly antiheroes are some sense of pathos, something to connect with or feel for, but this movie doesn’t offer enough to explain or absolve Bernadette’s actions. By the time the credits roll to the well-worn tune of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” I’m not convinced Linklater knew where his movie should end or what he wanted to say by telling this story.
Nor does there seem to be a clear visual style beyond constant grey and rainy skies hovering over the movie’s version of Seattle. It’s not that it’s terribly shot by cinematographer Shane F. Kelly, it’s that it’s so blandly competent, it barely feels like a Richard Linklater film. His movies tend to feel so much more empathetic towards their characters. From the blossoming romance between characters played by Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke in the “Before” trilogy, the rowdy college boys of “Everybody Wants Some!!” and even the unserious substitute teacher played by Jack Black in “School of Rock,” these worlds in these movies reflected the stories playing out on Linklater’s stages. That that connection is missing in “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” speaks to its discord.
Perhaps its the present day fatigue that makes this movie about a wealthy white woman who abandons her family to find herself feel so terribly out-of-place. Bernadette lives in a very comfortable bubble: her family owns their home, she’s married to a supportive husband with a high salary job at a tech company (Microsoft, in case they don’t say it enough times in the script co-written by Linklater, Holly Gent and Vincent Palmo Jr.). She doesn’t shut her daughter down when asked for a trip to Antartica, which no, most Americans would not be able to afford. The book is not yet a decade old and already it feels like the self-fulfillment worries of another lifetime. In this world, it seems only wealthy artists can afford the luxury to create, to run away from their family without warning, sweet talk their way into a fairly restricted part of the planet and claim it as something they needed to do for their genius work. It’s a privileged perspective with nothing to share for the rest of us.
The original “47 Meters Down”—which told the story of a pair of sisters (Mandy Moore and Claire Holt) on a boat tour promising close-up encounters with sharks who found themselves trapped at the bottom of the ocean floor inside a damaged cage with too little air in their tanks, too many meters to the surface to make a safe ascent and too many CGI sharks in the area who were feeling a bit snacky—was slated to go direct-to-video until it was picked up for theatrical release two summers ago. The resulting film was not particularly good—it squandered its intriguing premise and the appealing performances from Moore and Holt on a series of increasingly banal shock moments before culminating with one of the stupidest endings to grace any film in recent memory. For whatever reason, it went on to become a sleeper hit. And thus, like clockwork, “47 Meters Down: Uncaged” is upon us and it is no small irony that this one was always destined for a theatrical release because between its B-minus-level cast, tatty visual effects and a storyline that goes far beyond the long line of shark-related films preceding it to find elements to pilfer, it is the one that feels more like a direct-to-video item that inexplicably wound up in theaters in search of a few bucks from bored late-summer audiences.
Since the list of surviving characters from the first film was fairly short and it would be unrealistic to expect them to base a follow-up around the misadventures of Matthew Modine’s hapless boat captain (though his tale might have inspired the late Oscar Wilde, were he alive and into junky shark movies, to muse “To lose one group of ninnies to sharks may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness”), “Uncaged” has no narrative connection to its predecessor. Set in Mexico, the film stars Sophie Nelisse as Mia, an American girl who has recently moved to Mexico with her undersea explorer father (John Corbett), his new wife (Nia Long) and stepsister Sasha (Corinne Foxx, daughter of Jamie), who fails to protect her from the school mean girls who bully her for no evident reason. The next day, Dad tries to get the two to share some quality time together by getting them tickets for a glass-bottomed boat excursion but when Sasha’s friends, Alexa (Brianne Tju) and Nicole (Sistine Stallone, niece of Frank), turn up with a better idea, she goes with them and brings Mia along for the ride.
The better idea turns out to be a remote lagoon adjacent to the entrance to a submerged Mayan city that Mia’s dad recently discovered. Luckily, his research team has left four sets of scuba gear around and the four decide to take a quick peek at the city’s first entry point. It is all fun and games for a bit but when one of them panics when a fish lunges at her, it inspires a chain reaction that sends much of the entrance crashing down and cutting them off from the surface. It's only then that the promised shark makes its long-overdue appearance—in this case, it is a great white who is blind from having spent so long in the underwater depths without sunlight but whose other senses are heightened as a result. Now, with dwindling air supplies and a blind and cranky shark at their heels, the four are forced to negotiate the twisty, increasingly cramped surroundings in a desperate effort to save themselves from drowning and being digested. A couple of additional characters pop up from time to time, but their fates are so overtly preordained that they may as well be wearing red scuba suits.
Not even the most devoted of Mandy Moore fans would mistake “47 Meters Down” for a good movie by any means, but it at least played reasonably fair with viewers (until the appalling ending, that is)—it allowed the characters to do all the right things to combat their plight and still found ways to turn the screws on them. Apparently returning co-writers Johannes Roberts and Ernest Riera used up all their borderline clever ideas to keep a story like this moving along and have instead elected to tell one that requires practically everyone to act like an absolute idiot at every moment to get from Point A to A-. Otherwise, the big innovation here seems to be that the two spend as much time ripping off “The Descent” as they do the usually litany of shark movies, though one of the latter pilferings is so blatant that it is almost breathtaking in its audacity.
As for the characters, they are so devoid of actual personality that once they don their scuba helmets and dive underwater, it is all but impossible to tell them apart at any given moment. Like most films that are set almost entirely underwater, this is not a particularly appealing film from a visual perspective—it is way too dark and murky for its own good—and when Roberts does put together one decent water-based attack sequence involving an incongruous musical accompaniment, it only serves as an echo of a similar sequence that proved to be the only memorable moment of his previous film, “The Strangers: Prey At Night.” Beyond that, the only thing that works here, ironically enough, is the ending, which is just as nonsensical as the originals, but is nevertheless goofy enough to bring some sorely needed energy to the proceedings.
In recent years, I seem to have become this site’s go-to guy for movies focused on sharks gnawing on people. On the grand scale of such things, “47 Meters Down: Uncaged” is probably somewhere smack in the middle—it is no “Jaws” (or even “Jaws 2”) but it is slightly better than whatever shark-related nonsense is currently airing on SyFy as I am writing these words. Actually, if you are seized with some weird desire to see this, waiting for it to turn up on SyFy in a few months might actually be the smart bet—you won’t lose anything visually and the commercials might help break up the monotony.

Taapsee Pannu has never shied away from putting her point of view forward and her recent spat with Rangoli Chandel has been the talk-of-the-town for quite some time now. Kangana Ranaut’s sister/manager called Taapsee a ‘sasti copy’ after she appreciated her performance in the trailer of Judgementall Hai Kya. Things kept getting worse from there and now, it has taken a new turn.
During one of her promotional interviews for Mission Mangal, Taapsee Pannu questioned Kangana asking why Kangana hasn’t praised her film since it has 5 lead actresses in it. She has also elaborated saying that even though she has not been a part of as many films as Kangana, she has worked in a decent number of films and deserves to be appreciated. Rangoli Chandel did not hold back and has asked Taapsee to speak to her directly.
Take a look at Rangoli’s tweets, right here.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2019 officially closed its tenth edition with the screening of Gurinder Chadha’s Blinded by the Lights. Complete with Bollywood performances by children, Chadha will grace the occasion to take questions for the audience post-event. Based on the book by journalist Sarfaraz Manzoor, Blinded by the Lights has been lauded for its fresh narrative. It’s said to be amongst the best coming of age stories from the sub-continent talking about the quintessential immigrant inside story from a lived-in perspective. It’s also a tribute to Bruce Springsteen’s and his works
The film was first screened at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and bagged a mega worldwide distribution deal. It’s scheduled for an Indian release this week. The movie, featuring Viviek Kalra and Hayley Atwell along with Nell Williams in the lead, is Chadha’s offering post Bend It Like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice.
Mitu Bhowmick Lange said, “Soaked in all issues and things close to our hearts, this is the film that will have a strong connect with the audience. Every Indian in Melbourne will feel in sync with the story as it is a narrative replete with stories close to their hearts. The universal story of immigrants said with the most personal touch.” This year, the IFFM screened over 60 films in over 20 languages, including Vijay Sethupathi’s Super Deluxe, National award-winning Bulbul Can Sing, Bhoga Khirkee and the Oscar-winning Period: End of Sentence.
Vidya Sinha, who lit up many of Basu Chatterjee’s rom-coms in the 1970s and 80s, is no more. She breathed here last in a hospital in Mumbai on August 15, the day of independence for our country and a bizarrely opportune time for Vidya to be freed of the burden of living.
The last years were not kind to this pretty quiet dignified actress. The heroines’ roles had died out long ago and Vidya had switched to television where she played matronly roles in serials like Kkavyanjali, Qubool Hai, and Ishq Ka Rang Safed. But even the serials had stopped coming her way now. In 2009 Vidya had filed a police complaint against her second husband Netaji Bhimrao Sulunkhe accusing him of torture and extortion. She finally won a long court battle with her husband in 2011 for maintenance.
Vidya had a short but glorious innings as a leading lady. She was a favourite with two filmmakers B R Chopra and Basu Chatterjee.
With the formidable B R Chopra she did the memorable marital comedy Pati Patni Aur Woh as well as the disastrous love triangles Karm and Mukti (both produced by B R Chopra and directed by Chopra’s son-in-law Raj Tilak).
It was Basu Chatterjee who gave Vidya her fleeting fling with fame. Chatterjee introduced Vidya in the arthouse hit Rajnigandha in 1974 and followed it up with another success Chotisi Baat. It is these two films that she is remembered by to this day. Vidya went on to do other films directed by Basuda, like Tumhare Liye (co-starring her Pati Patni Aur Woh leading man Sanjeev Kumar), and Safed Jhooth. But she did not find much success in cinema after her initial spurt of nominal arthouse stardom with her first two films.
Curiously she worked with the biggest of directors during her brief spell of stardom in the 1970s, including Gulzar (Kitaab, Meera). But somehow her career never took off in a big way.Vidya once confessed she never took her career seriously. The truth is the reverse. Her career never took her seriously.
Famous songs filmed on Vidya Balan
1. 'Rajnigandha Phool Tumhare': Rajniganda
2. 'Na Jaane Kyon Hota Hai Yun Zindagi Ke Saath': Chotisi Baat
3. 'Jaan-E-Man Jaan-E-Man Mere Do Nayan': Chotisi Baat
4. 'Tumhe Dekhti Hoon Toh Lagta Hai Aise': Tumhare Liye
5. 'Thande Thande Pani Se Nahana Chahiye': Pati Patni Aur Woh
Muscling in with a big-budgeted blockbuster at the last minute is now becoming a norm. Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidwani did it once earlier to Hrithik Roshan when in January 2017; they released their Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees alongside Roshan’s Kaabil although the Roshans had announced their film from long before.
Sidhwani and Farhan are doing it again. They are all set to release the Hindi version of Telugu cinema’s most expensive film to date Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy on the same day as Hrithik’s big action starrer War for Yash Raj films.
A source close to War says Ritesh and Farhan’s move is unethical. “Aditya Chopra and Yash Raj Film had announced War for 2nd October, months ago. Suddenly Excel (Farhan and Ritesh’s company) comes up with this dubbed Hindi film. It just upsets everything.”
And to think Farhan and Hrithik are close friends. This is the second time Farhan is doing this to Hrithik.
Looks like the war has just started. Also Read: Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment to distribute Chiranjeevi – Amitabh Bachchan’s Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy
R Madhavan recently posted a picture with his father and son where the trio celebrated Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, and Avani Avittam. The internet couldn’t stop gushing over the three generations smiling wide as they posed for the picture. While the internet couldn’t stop being in awe of them, there were a certain group of trolls who ended up over-analyzing a picture.
In the background, a holy cross could be spotted next to Lord Ganesha’s idol. Making a mountain out of a molehill, a troll decided to highlight and point out the “problem” in the picture. Making derogatory comments about losing respect for Madhavan, she tried to attack the Rang De Basanti actor but got beautifully shut down by the actor. He posted a note pointing out how he has blessings from all the religions and respects every religion as his own. He also pointed out that he was surprised the troll did not spot the framed picture of Golden Temple in their “sickness”. Take a look at the conversation between them.
Why do they have a across in the background?! Is that a Mandir? You just lost my respect. Do you find Hindu Gods in Christian churches? All this is fake drama you did today! pic.twitter.com/w5mdrSKxRL

Parineeti Chopra is now in London shooting for the Hindi remake of a very dark brooding intense British drama The Girl On The Train for which the marvellous Emily Blunt was nominated for the BAFTA award for the best actress. The role is that of an alcoholic woman who has delusional images of horrible happenings in a home that she sees from a train every day.
Ms Blunt drank her way through the performance. Apparently, she was on alcohol right through the shooting of the film to remain in character. Parineeti has no such ambitions. “I am not drinking, just acting,” she divulges,
This brings us to the actors who have actually been on a high while playing an alcoholic. Highest on the ‘high’ list is the mighty Dilip Kumar who actually drank to look convincing as the sozzled lover in Bimal Roy’s Devdas. The closest we came to this level of (drunken) dedication was Aamir Khan who doesn’t touch a drop of alcohol in real life but drank himself silly for a song where he had to act drunk.
It remains to be seen how convincing Parineeti looks as an alcoholic without being drunk. Also Read: Watch: Parineeti Chopra shoots for The Girl On The Train in London

Sonakshi Sinha, in February, was accused in a fraud case in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. A case was registered against Sonakshi Sinha under sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code. On Wednesday, August 14, Sonakshi Sinha reached Moradabad to record her statement in a fraud case. The reason she was summoned to Moradabad is because she could not meet the police in Mumbai. After recording the statement, she flew to Jaipur to continue her shoot for Dabangg 3.
Sonakshi Sinha had earlier released a statement and dismissed the allegations made against her. “An event organiser who couldn’t live up to his commitment obviously thinks he can make a fast buck by maligning my crystal clear image in the press. There is full cooperation with the authorities from my end for the investigation to be conducted. Would request the media not to fan these bizarre claims of an unscrupulous man,” the actress had tweeted.ALSO READ: Sonakshi Sinha looks ravishing in her latest Anamika Khanna ensemble

Richa plays a public prosecutor fighting to get justice for her client who claims she has been raped by a movie director (Rahul Bhatt), who is being defended by Akshaye Khanna’s character.
Akshaye Khanna who plays a criminal lawyer while talking about the film said, “When you watch the film, I am sure you will recognise that the director has made this film with a lot of maturity as it is quite nuanced. Whether it is the story or the dialogue, it is very fresh. His take on this particular law, the judicial system and the relationships between the characters is commendable. His extremely high level of writing is what really attracted me to do this film.”
Section 375 is directed by Ajay Bahl and produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak, Abhishek Pathak & SCIPL co-produced by Sanjeev Joshi and Aditya Chowksey. The film revolves around a director played by Rahul Bhat being accused of rape by costume assistant played Meera Chopra.
Actress Nithya Menen is a popular face in the Southern film industry. The actress is all set to make her Hindi debut with the multi-starrer Mission Mangal. She will be playing one of the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) scientists. The film also stars Vidya Balan, Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Sonakshi Sinha.
Nithya said that she chose this film as her debut because she did not want her first Hindi film to be a rom-com, as is the norm. The actress who has featured in several South Indian languages said that she has always chosen unconventional films from the beginning. Menen feels her movie choices are unconventional because she never really wanted to become an actor. She does a film only if she loves the story.
So when the actress decided to enter the Hindi film industry, she was not looking for a conventional rom-com. The OK Kanmani actress believes that the film should be bigger than an actor as that is the only way to make good films. Nithya Menen also said that the film becomes mediocre when the actor becomes bigger than the story and hence creates an imbalance.
Nithya Menen has worked in several movies in the Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu industry. Initially she wanted to become a journalist, but dropped the thought during her time at college. It was tough for her to convince her parents, as she came from a family where creative jobs were not much encouraged.
Actor Akshaye Khanna will next be seen in the thriller film Section 375, directed by Ajay Bahl. At the trailer launch of the film, the actor was asked about the sequel of the film Dil Chahta Hai. The cult classic film recently completed 18 years of release. The film was directed by Farhan Akhtar and had Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan along with Akshaye Khanna play the lead characters. The film traces the journey of three friends.
Responding to the question on the sequel of the film, Akshaye Khanna said, “I have always told Farhan that wait till all of us are fifty plus, then make Dil Chahta Hai 2. Then it will be fun. It is no fun if you make it in 10-15 years. Aamir is 50+ and Saif will be there soon. I’ll take a little more time, but then we’ll see.”
Akshaye Khanna will be seen playing the role of a criminal lawyer who has shades of grey. When asked about his role, the Hulchul actor said, “I did the film because I was totally impressed and inspired by Ajay’s (Bahl) writing. I had not come across this kind of writing in the longest time. He seems to have given all his heart and soul to it, and it shows because it is so mature and in-depth.”
Khanna talking about the film said, “When you watch the film, I am sure you will recognise that the director has made this film with a lot of maturity as it is quite nuanced. Whether it is the story or the dialogue, it is very fresh. His take on this particular law, the judicial system and the relationships between the characters is commendable. His extremely high level of writing is what really attracted me to do this film.”
The film also stars Richa Chadha as parallel lead, who also plays a lawyer. Section 375 is scheduled to release on September 13.

As a result, the Stree actress will have two releases back-to-back.

Now, it is ironic that two of those films are releasing just one week apart. It is the first time that something like this is happening to me. As actors, we keenly wait for these Fridays, but this is double the happiness for me. Promoting two films at the same time is going to be hectic, but I am excited about both the projects, especially, because they are so different from one other. There’s been so much learning, shooting for these films together, playing vastly different roles”. Shraddha Kapoor is the perfect definition of versatility! In all her projects Saaho, Chhichhore, and Street Dancer 3D, the actress will be portraying extremely different roles. In Saaho trailer, the actress looks extremely stunning where Shraddha personifies action woman holding a gun in hand, wearing boots and going all the way formals looking more professional like always in the cop avatar is a witness that Shraddha knows how to blend in any role that she takes up.

This year is going to be a treat for Shraddha’s fans as she has two releases lined up, Saaho alongside Baahubali fame Prabhas, Nitesh Tiwari’s Chhichhore and both have her looking extremely different from each other.
Sidharth Malhotra has already started shooting for his next, Shershaah as soon as Jabariya Jodi release. Despite the turmoil in Kashmir, the team is trying their best to catch up on the missed out time due to the delay in equipment and crew members’ arrival. The actor has been appreciated for his role in Jabariya Jodi and the reviews have also been turning out to be positive. While the fans loved his never-seen-before avatar, Sidharth Malhotra in his recent interview spoke about failure and criticism.
When asked about how he takes failure, he said that an actor’s growth should not be defined by his performance in just one film. Failure does affect him and he’s aware that some of his films didn’t do as well as the others, but he knows how to deal with failure. He makes sure to maintain a positive outlook. While failure and criticism hold a few people back, Sidharth says it only motivates him to try something new every single time. He elaborated further how it adds fire to his belly and also spoke about how there are superstars who still work hard. At the end of the day, all he does is keep working hard towards his goal.
He will be seen in Shershaah with Kiara Advani where he will portray the role of Captain Vikram Batra.

The All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has banned singer Mika Singh after he performed in Karachi for Pervez Musharraf’s relative. Several people called out on the singer on social media for performing in Karachi, Pakistan.
A week ago, the Indian Government revoked Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This decision by the Government drew some strong reaction from the Government. Pakistan banned the screening of Indian films. Following this, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) had demanded blanket ban on Pakistani artists, diplomats and bilateral relations with Pakistan and its people.
Mika Singh's performance in Karachi received a lot of flak from his fans. The All India Cine Workers Association has issued an official statement banning singer Mika Singh for his performance in Karachi.
Reportedly, the AICWA has said that it will not allow anyone in the industry to work with the singer as he is being banned. The organization feels that Mika Singh did not care much about the country's pride when he decided to perform in Karachi for a wedding which was for Pervez Musharraf's relative. This step by the singer did not go down well with anyone from the All India Cine Workers Association. Now, AICWA has asked the I&B Ministry to look into this case
