Farhan Akhtar recently opened up about his long-standing bond with Shah Rukh Khan, a friendship that extends far beyond their collaboration on Don. Speaking on Mid-Day’s Sit With Hitlist series, Farhan reflected on his journey as a filmmaker, actor and storyteller one shaped not only by the films he made but also by the people who influenced him. Among them, Shah Rukh Khan holds a special place.

Their professional relationship began soon after the release of Dil Chahta Hai. Farhan recalled, “Shah Rukh Khan and I spent a lot of time after Dil Chahta Hai.” Although he had tried reaching SRK earlier, their first meaningful interaction happened when the superstar watched the film at Famous Studios in Mahalaxmi. “That was the first time we met professionally. He had earlier met me as Honey Irani’s son,” Farhan shared, describing the early days when their bond transitioned from industry familiarity to genuine friendship.
Their connection deepened during the extensive prep for Lakshya, much of which took place in Delhi. Farhan said, “When I was in the thick of prep for Lakshya, we met more often, as Gauri’s family was from there, and Shah Rukh was also there numerous times.” A memorable coincidence further strengthened their rapport. The restaurant where Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta’s breakup scene was filmed happened to belong to one of Shah Rukh’s childhood friends. “He asked me to stay back and chill around till Shah Rukh came. That is how we started hanging out,” Farhan recalled.
After Lakshya, their conversations about collaborating continued, driven by Farhan’s desire to work with SRK. “There is something very magnetic and charming about him,” he said. Eventually, he pitched Don, and the partnership became one of Bollywood’s most iconic director-actor collaborations.
But one memory from the Don shoot in Paris still makes Farhan laugh. Struggling with a severe neck ache in harsh weather, he found unexpected “help” from Shah Rukh. “Shah Rukh asked me about my ache, and he massaged my neck. Then he gave me a pill to ease the pain,” Farhan said. The next morning, however, things took a humorous turn. “The next day, my neck was completely jammed… so he is great at a lot of things, but not massages.”
