Ganderbal, Nov 30: Daily traffic congestion along key stretches of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district continues to cause severe inconvenience to commuters, with residents, students and government employees expressing deep frustration over the long-standing issue.
The Nagbal–Beehama corridor, one of the district’s busiest routes, witnesses routine gridlocks that often last for hours. Commuters said the situation has worsened over the past months, with no substantial intervention from the authorities.
“Frequent traffic jams at the Nagbal-Beehama stretch cause immense problems to people including employees and students. Even ambulances get trapped in these jams, putting patients’ lives at risk,” a group of daily commuters told Greater Kashmir.
The congestion is particularly severe near the SP Office, Nagbal Chowk, Beehama Chowk and Tawheed Chowk—intersections where traffic flow remains largely unregulated. Locals said the lack of traffic management and the slow pace of ongoing road-widening work have compounded the problem.
“Frequent, unending traffic jams have drastically affected our lives and business. The worst hit are government employees and students who struggle to reach their destinations on time,” said a shopkeeper at Beehama Chowk.
Students too voiced concern, saying the traffic mess is eating into their study time and daily routine. “We never reach school on time due to these jams,” said Ishfaq Manzoor, a student from the area.
Residents pointed out that in several stretches, the road remains too narrow to handle the growing volume of vehicles, adding to daily chaos. They also blamed the lack of functional parking facilities in the town, leaving drivers with no choice but to park along the roadside, further choking the already cramped routes.
“With hardly any dedicated parking space, vehicles spill onto the road, creating bottlenecks and triggering traffic collapse,” locals said.
They urged the administration to take urgent measures to streamline traffic, expedite road-widening work and create parking zones to restore normalcy in the district headquarters.
“We appeal to the higher authorities to look into the matter and address our grievances before the situation worsens further,” residents said.
