The premiere of Christmas Karma was held at a multiplex in Mumbai on December 2. Organized by PVR INOX Pictures, it was graced by Nayana Bijli, Lead: Distribution and Licensing, PVR INOX Limited and executive producers Anushka Shah, Sunil Sheth, while the chief guest was Amruta Fadnavis. After the film’s screening, director Gurinder Chadha had a lovely conversation with none other than Karan Johar about the film and a lot more.
Karan Johar began by saying, “I have a deep amount of respect, regard and reverence for Gurinder. I had the pleasure and privilege of knowing her for decades. I still remember my very first time at the Cannes Film Festival, where I saw her breakthrough film, Bend It Like Beckham (2002). It was a packed hall and my father (Yash Johar) was also present with me. I remember he felt so proud about the Punjabi representation in the film. He had that smile on his face and was very happy when the Punjabi music played. It was a true representation of the Sikh-Punjabi-British diaspora combination; it came out so beautifully and effectively.”
Gurinder smiled and added, “I remember our meeting outside Star Cinema Hall. I was overjoyed to see two Indian people in the audience amongst all the firangis! I was like, ‘Aah, 2 people of my own’. I didn’t know you then. I remember your father absolutely beaming. When I went to say hello to him, he patted me on my back and said ‘Shabaash’! It meant a lot as I had lost my father a couple of years before. To have that blessing from him was really amazing.”
At the end of the conversation, Gurinder Chadha revealed, “I had the pleasure of hearing about a film that was creating waves in the UK. I was like, ‘God, I’d better go and see this film. Let’s see what the fuss is all about’. That’s how I went to the cinemas to watch Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023).”
She added, “Oh my god, I absolutely loved the film. It was all heart and fully fresh. The characterizations were so modern. But it was also very true to the spirit of the film. I could see Karan in every frame. Honestly, I came out bursting with pride. I left him a message, ‘Karan, I just spent 30 pounds of my own money to go and see your film and my god, what a fricking, amazing achievement’!”
She told KJo, “You captured the NRI aspect so well. In Britain, we were so proud of it because we loved all the jokes. We knew the character of Ranveer Singh. We have all had cousins like that! We know that person. It was wonderful.”
Gurinder Chadha joked, “Karan replied to me, thanking me so much. I think it was important that we show that respect. He did tell me, ‘I’ll give you 30 pounds when I see you. I am waiting for it’!”
