No emails, phone calls after working hours & during holidays: ‘Right to Disconnect’ Bill tabled

NCP MP Supriya Sule on Saturday tabled the Right to Disconnect Bill, 2025, which proposes the creation of an Employees’ Welfare Authority and seeks to legally grant workers the right to disengage from official emails and phone calls after working hours and during holidays. The bill also outlines provisions protecting employees who refuse to respond to work-related communication outside designated duty hours.

Workplace reforms were further highlighted in other bills. Congress MP Kadiyam Kavya introduced the Menstrual Benefits Bill, 2024, advocating improved workplace infrastructure and support systems for women during menstruation. In a similar effort, LJP MP Shambhavi Choudhary proposed a bill mandating paid menstrual leave for female employees and students, along with access to hygiene facilities and health-related benefits.

Education and judicial reforms also featured among the proposed laws. Congress MP Manickam Tagore introduced a bill seeking exemption for Tamil Nadu from the NEET requirement for undergraduate medical admissions, a matter currently before the Supreme Court after the President declined approval for the state’s earlier legislation.

DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi moved a bill calling for the complete abolition of the death penalty in India, aligning with long-standing debates and the Law Commission’s earlier recommendation to restrict capital punishment to terror-related offences.

Additionally, Independent MP Vishaldada Prakashbapu Patil put forward the Journalist (Prevention of Violence and Protection) Bill, 2024, aimed at safeguarding journalists, preventing attacks, and ensuring protection of their professional equipment and personal property.
