Islamabad- Speculation around former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s condition escalated after his three sisters were allegedly “brutally assaulted” by police when they attempted to meet him outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Wednesday. The incident sparked widespread anger and renewed scrutiny of the government’s handling of Khan’s incarceration.
Khan’s sisters, Noreen Khan, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, have written to Punjab police chief Usman Anwar demanding an impartial investigation into what they described as an “orchestrated attack” on them and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters. The women say they have not been allowed to meet their brother for over three weeks.
Their allegations emerged as rumours, largely from social-media accounts based in Afghanistan and Pakistan, falsely claiming Imran Khan had been “mysteriously killed” inside Adiala Jail. These posts reignited concerns about the former PM’s safety, already heightened by the family’s restricted access to him.
According to PTI, the sisters and supporters were sitting peacefully outside the prison when police allegedly switched off streetlights and “pounced on them” without warning. Noreen said she was dragged by her hair, thrown to the ground and pulled across the road, while other women were slapped and manhandled.
The sisters described the violence as part of “a broader pattern of indiscriminate force” used against peaceful protesters over the past three years.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 in multiple cases and, according to PTI, is being kept in solitary confinement with limited access to lawyers, books and basic items. Even Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was denied permission to meet him despite making several attempts.
Legal representatives say an undeclared ban on meetings has been in place for more than a month, intensifying concerns as rumours about Khan’s wellbeing continue to circulate online.
