‘We’ve lost everything’: deaths in Indonesia’s flood-hit Sumatra rise to 72

Heavy monsoon rains have pummelled Indonesia’s Sumatra island over the past week, causing widespread flooding and landslides, and leaving at least 72 dead with hundreds more missing. Villagers and residential areas were swept away or buried by mudslides, affecting more than 2,000 homes in North Sumatra, according to Indonesia’s Disaster Management Agency. Temperatures dip to -8.5C in Poland and 250mm of rain falls in 24-hour period across Sri Lanka Temperatures plummeted this week across the eastern half of Europe, with the Alps dipping as low as -20C and to -8.5°C in the Polish town of Zakopane in the Tatras Mountains. Heavy snow also affected other parts of Poland with 15-20cm of snow falling in much of the central swathe of the country and more than 40cm in the south towards the mountains. Odisha’s ambitious Adarsha Vidyalayas are facing a severe shortage of teaching and administrative staff, according to information presented by the School & Mass Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj in the State Assembly. Addressing the Odisha Assembly, the Minister revealed that out of the 315 sanctioned Principal posts, an alarming 261 remain vacant, affecting the overall academic and administrative functioning of these model schools.
