A full 22 months away from his favorite surface, Rafael Nadal looked right at home on the clay Tuesday in Barcelona.

The 12-time tournament champion rolled in his return clubbing Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 6-3.

“Every time it is more difficult and especially when you are at an advanced age, it makes things even tougher,” Nadal told the ATP. “I’m going through tough moments but at the same time, when I’m able to be on Tour for a few days and practice with the guys and then be able to compete a little bit, it means a lot to me. Still enjoyable enough to keep going. I’m happy to start with a victory without a doubt.”

The 37-year-old Nadal was playing just his second event since the 2023 Australian Open due to hip issues. But today, Nadal was thrilled with the return as were the throngs of fans watching in the packed stands.

“The crowd was great,” he added. “A full crowd since the beginning. Even before the match started, the court was full, so that means a lot to me to be able to walk on court today and feel that warmth and that support. In a very special place for me, it’s so helpful and means a lot to me to receive that support and that love.”

Nadal will have no rest as he returns tomorrow to take on a very in-form and hungry Alex de Minaur. Nadal leads 3-1 with the last two going the distance. The Australian won their last meeting at the start of 2023 at the United Cup.
